Hello dear readers,

Today has been rather monotonous, and so, when a random current thought struck me as odd, I decided to delve into it. The question is quite simple.

Would you class Transformers as alive?

Consider, if you will, the nature of life, as philosophy states. The concept of "I think therefore I am" is surely an outdated one in the light of such wondrous thinkers as Orwell and Cameron; modern day philosophers who gave us 1984 and The Terminator respectively. People have been arguing it for years: whether life is, in fact, reality or just some strange expression of somebody else's laugh at our expense. The ideas of back and forth dreams are a constant, but, be that aside, surely everybody believes in some form of definition as to what constitutes life.

The Transformers, as I'm sure most if not all of you know by now, are entirely mechanoid in design, with no organic component present in their make-up. Their DNA is Hexidecimal code. Their memories are log files. Does this make their artificial intelligence any less potent than our own? Surely, with their access to a central server hub of shared information (Trans-WiFi, if you will) would grant them far greater knowledge and awareness of their fellow man.

Erm, bot.

So that's the question I've been wrestling with for about four minutes, and making no headway on. 'Are Transformers alive' is, in my mind, a much better question that 'are we alive' since that shit never ends.

What do you think?

I'd count them as alive, yes, but the Michael Bay movies were so bad that it warrants the wholesale slaughter of their species.

You don't have to be carbon-based to be alive. Sentience alone brings the quality of aliveness in an entity.

I was always taught that there were 5 requirements to be "alive" to the scientific world. I don't remember what they all are, but given that viruses don't qualify (they lack cells), I think it would be pretty safe to assume that transformers won't either.

So people who can't move or reproduce aren't living? Or anything else on that list. No, this won't do. This won't do at all.

Yes, they are. Just because they aren't squishy doesn't mean they're not alive.

Aren't they aliens or something? Did they come into existence organically or were they man-made? Can their "species" reproduce in a biologic way?

What I'm trying to say is do Transformers fuck?

See I wonder about that too. Like how do they reproduce? I don't recall any other Transformers existing. I wonder if like lifeforms existed on Cybertron and then they realized they would die or something and they dumped their memories into robots.

I thought in the movie they said they were organic mechanoids or something like that.

It's not about individuals, it's about a species. Transformers as a species do all those things. Of course, so do viruses, which scientists are speciesist about, but that's neither here nor anywhere else.

Really though a philosophical idea of "what is life" is kinda silly in the wake of scientific understanding.

Colohue!!!! I assume you are over 12yrs old ( I have read some of your stuff ) Transformers? Really? Take me to your dealer!
#30
Hmmmm, so I looked it up. Apparently, as evidenced by the dinobots (the only case of transformer reproduction recorded in the series) transformers reproduce by building a new transformer. Which leads me to further believe that the original transformers may have just been people who dumped their minds into giant machines.

It refers to a typical individual of a species, I think, not necessarily examples of where any are impaired.

Yeah, I'd call em alive.

Not much debate needed they've had several seasons and series of their TV shows to explain this.

This, but I learned it with 5, as someone else said. Transformers, if they were to exist outside of a movie, would be sentient but not living.

Of course this wouldn't be set in stone. Just because a human being is paralyzed does not mean they are considered dead. In their natural fully functional state, they would be capable of movement, and therefore meet all the requirements to be considered "living".

I'm positive that the 7 qualities of life define whether or not a specie is "alive", not an individual.
