Otherwise it'll be the usual 20 posts of Fender, Ibanez, Schecter, G&L, warwick, ESP ETC.
Look used for better bang for the buck, and what amp is he using?

Edit: he also should be doing independent research, as 3rd hand suggestions are hardly a good way to decide how to spend that much money

Yeah best advice is that you gotta go play them. Especially without us having much specification here. Although I would highly suggest he looks into a used instrument. Check your local stores and craigslist, see what they have to offer, play different basses.

If I would have waited one more day, I could have payed half for a used version of my 610 cab.
