I had an other thread recently, but I felt like the topic changed, and it died out. Well here is what I've concluded now. I play in a rock christian band, not super heavey or anything, and some lighter songs.

I need an amp with modern tones, and my personal taste suits a brighter tone with lower mids. That includes:

This tone is most important: Medium-High Gain - Bright, lowish mid tones, with a tight end, yet little amount of "fuzziness", or "graininess" in the frequencies/treble. Good for power chording, and strings really ring separately for solos.

Second most important tone: Low gain - Fairly bright, just a bit crunchy, enough that it is distorted when playing an open chord, but can still tell notes apart while playing each string separately (leaving them all ringing)

These last two are the least that I'd use, maybe with cleans more important:
Clean tone - I like clean tones to be bright and resonant. Low mid tones as well, but I don't use clean very often.

High gain - Again, Bright and low (not too low) midtones. Very tight end, and pretty much would only use this for metal. I'd say I'd use this setting the least.

Sorry for a second thread so soon, I just feel like I know more what I want now, and I can't seem to be able to find an amp that really screams out to me yet.

As for budget, list every amp that comes to mind, but also consider by $300 - $400 price range as well. Willing to go used for sure so new price could be as much as $600.

Peavey Ultra. Seen them go for as low as $150 but generally like 200-250. Plenty left over to get a nice cab.

I'm sorry, I didn't see it.

He could get a Peavey Ultra or a 5150 combo for that money, though.

It's very old. It's the predecessor to the XXX which is the predecessor to the current 3120. The design has remained much the same, though.

Just because it's old doesn't mean it can't sound modern.

You probably won't be able to try before you buy, but they're cheap enough and consistently priced below $400 that you could buy one, try it, resell it and make your money back or more.

You're probably not gonna find anything much better than an Ultra in that price range anyway. Not to say that the Ultra is a bad amp by any means, it's absolutely killer, not only for the money, but killer in general.

Every Krank I've tried (5+) has sounded very buzzy/fizzy. Its just the way that the gain feels structured.

Perhaps it was your guitar, cable, etc...

The original Krankenstein had a small fizz issue when the volume was below 9 o'clock. That's about it. Never had an issue with fizz, always experienced thick and tight gain.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you all know that i think i might hold back on a "nice" new amp. Theres a 15W 8" speaker combo down at my local GC for $90, and i might be able to talk the price down. i could just use that as a base for my pedal.

I've figured that until i can afford a 40W+ amp for gigging especially, I shouldn't try to get both a gigable amp and a recording/practicing amp in one. it should be plenty loud enough for a drummer, as my peavey gets the job done at half volume.

only reason im not keep the vypyr, is a multifx thru a moddeler sounds like crap. :P

thanks though guys, ill try to save until i can afford a higher wattage amp that I can gig with, with more headroom.

Why not just keep your vypyr and not waste the money? You shouldn't need a mfx with the vypyr thats kinda the point. You will just be making it take $90 longer to get the amp you want.

Never buy a mark series amp. Your head will explode.

ON TOPIC EDIT:

You can gig a tweaker. May need to mic it if you play a bigger venue, but it'll handle small bars and clubs no problem unmic'd... plus when you crank the shit out of it, it sounds amazing. Win win. Did you try out the tweaker yet? I have a Mark IV, and I'm considering getting a tweaker because they sound so good.

I don't use the vypyr for its modelling, I use my digitech through it, on tuner mode. You sure it would sound any better for that?

and yes i tried the tweaker, and it was just too dark for my taste. I couldn't get a good bright tone out of it, and yes I know what im doing with the EQ and tone switches, i tried it for about 30 minutes.

BTW, id sell my vypyr if i get a new amp, whether its that orange or whatever.

What guitar were you playing, how high way the volume and did you have the speaker pointing at your ears?

I was thinking the tweaker on American voice has a lot of treble, especially with the bright switch on, or more EQ ed treble/mid.
