Hey guys,

I'm looking for fun new toy that can make some cool noises. My rig pretty much covers all the "classic" sounds (plus a few fun things with the Eclipse). I'm thinking something along the lines of a Kaos Pad, some whacked out distortion/fuzz, something crazy from ZVex (tremolo probe, seek wah, seek trem, etc). I don't know;I'm stumped. I don't normally start recommendation threads, but MW3 came out last night and that's all I have on the brain. Also, I could use something to inspire me to play guitar and not sit on the couch all day and night.

Cheers,
Colin

Fuzz probe maybe? Or the cool robot trem effect. Trying to find a link for it now.

This might be it. It's close anyway.

do you have a cat?

try rubbing catnip all over the grillcloth of your favorite cab and play the solo to freebird while trying to keep the cats at bay.

that should keep you busy for a while.

or buy a pog.

the funny thing is the tone you get is probably the same either way.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, then it hit me.

i use a bunch of 'toys' for different types of noises. the one that i seem to use quite a bit is my moog MF-2 ring modulator, it provides a very 'synth-like' sound and doesn't completely mask you guitar's signal when the 'mix' knob is set right. also, because it is a ring modulator you can get quite a few types noises outta it as you play with the parameters and change the ratios of the carrier signal and input signal. the other bonus is moog stuff has all the CV in's for it's parameters. running a delay with the ring mod really ramps up this effect and provides a wall of beautiful fluctuating noise.

i also use a EHX HOG, very challenging pedal but also very rewarding. also works great with delay.

I have a D5, DX7 and a Quadrasynth. If I won lotto I'd have a Nord and a Korg M3 on the same shopping trip as my '59 Les Paul.

Look into the Roland GR system... a midi system that has a special pickup that you mount on your guitar (screws or 2-way tape)... then your guitar can sound like a pipe organ, a sitar, or any other 300 or so instruments, including some advanced synth stuff.

What you really need is a new amp.

WMD Gieger Counter makes some nasty fuzz. I like the moog suggestion above too. those pedals can do some really neat stuff if you play around a bit. I have a MuRF and it's basically like having insane phasing sounds and great ambient washes at the stomp of a foot switch.
Koass Pads can be fun if you're not too worried about destroying your tone

the thing about a lot of "ridiculous" effects is that they're often expensive and/or really hard to find. i recommend checking out some youtube videos from suggestions here and going from there

For those that care, I ended up selling my Strymon El Capistan and added that money to what I already had saved. I bought a TC Electronics Flashback and a used Fender '62 Jazzmaster RI.

The only real answer to the SG vs Les Paul debate is to get a Flying V and laugh at all the suckers who don't have one.
