Hi, Im in the market for a new guitar and I want to get something kind of off the beaten path.... currently all i own is ibanez guitars, dont get me wrong i love them but i want something different. I want something with single coils, maybe p90s, and possibly a maple fretboard..... do you guys have any suggestions?

price range, type of music, current amps, neck preferences?

we need a little bit more info. there are tonnes of unique and under appreciated guitars out there, but we need to narrow it down a little bit

honestly that is a stupid reason. they are popular for a reason. and also there are just as many ibanezes out there that everybody has. hell i even have an ibanez and am mainly a gibson guy. i really do like the ibby though (3550MZ).

jazzmaster with 3 jazz style pickups.

that'll be different. you'll ahve to build it yourself though.

honestly, without knowing the price you want to spend, and sound your going after, it'd be hard to recommend something to you.
DIFFERENT guitars that not many people go after are
ron wood esp tele (or distressed series)
dean palomino
hagstrom tremar super swede p90S
yamaha cv820 (split humbuckers)
b.c. rich eagle archtop
schecter hellcast VI
schecter s.e. solo 6
j mascis jazzmaster - squier
squier vintage modified tele s-s-miniH

the list can go on for a very very long time. saying your tired of humbuckers is pretty silly, since you can coil tap them, mix and match, or get something extremely versatile like the seymour duncan prails with triple shot bridge.

2 prails with triple shot mounting rings in a humbucker guitar will provide you more tones than you could ever hope for, and most likely will be able to get exactly what you want.

I know you said no Gibsons or Fenders but I think a Jazzmaster might work for ya. Its single coils are somewhere in between a regular single coil tone and P90 tone, it has a moderate fan base but by no means is it as mainstream as a Strat or say SG, and it's all around a badass guitar. It may not have a maple FB but you can always go to Allparts, StewMac, or Warmoth depending on your budget to fix that though I think tonally it's fine with the Rosewood.

EDIT: Ninja'd! Cool that the same guitar got mentioned though.

I want to spend 700-800 USD used, I was looking at the jazzmaster and that looks sweet! I'm gonna try and find some to play before I buy, thanks guys. And by different I meant something that's completely different from an ibanez I.e. thicker neck and not a strat shape. Also I don't understand how wanting something you don't see everyday is stupid.

So just to help narrow this down a bit, any double cutaway is probably too close to a Strat shape, right? So how about if we start there -- a single cut or other unique body style.

Not sure what pickups are in your Ibby, but I'm going to make another assumption here. No active pickups.

We have a budget to start with, so that's good. And you don't have a neck profile preference. You haven't mentioned number of strings, so I'm going to assume you still want 6 strings.

Off the top of my head I'm thinking of various telecaster styles, a crapload of potential singlecuts, explorer styles, "V"s, etc.

Care to confirm/deny these assumptions? Any other info you care to share?

Charvel So Cal. You'll thank me later.

it looks like a strat you idiot.

edit: honestly thread starter, try looking at the j mascis jazzmaster. squier's q.c. has gone up alot in the past few years, and the price is pretty apealing too

i guess you also didn't notice him saying he didnt want a strat. despite how you feel about things, charvels are strats with different pickups. even the necks feel amazingly similar.

You could try to find a Firebird. It's Gibson but you don't see a whole lot of those. I don't know if they still come like this, but I know they used to be available with P90s, too.

Different = Ugly. Honestly the only reason noone owns any of these "Different" guitars is because they're ugly as shit.

Have you ever thought about a guitar w/ >3 necks?

Not nessicarily. Also is that gretsch in my price range? And I'm not a fan of those sparkly guitars on MF but thanks for the suggestion! That's exactly what I'm looking for, odd ball guitars....

If you're looking at a non standard fender or gibson shape as a primary, have you looked at any of the BC Rich range.

They make guitar shapes that look like they can kill you just by looking at them. They don't come stock with P90's or maple FBs (but have a range with maple necks), then again I'm not sure if you're too concerned about this.

That one is a Guild, which was discontinued a few years ago. Brian May has his own line of Red Specials now. They sell for about US$800.00 new.

Fernandes Ravelle Deluxe. The HB's split into single coils.

The stock pickups are Seymour Duncan Jazz and JB.

Fernandes kick ass!
