I'm trying to write some cool melodies to go over a riff, and I could do a better job if I could figure out the key (I'm not the best at figuring out keys)

Anyways, the riff is basically 8th notes going F#, C#, D#, B.

I'm pretty sure its F# but I wanted to make sure.

Thanks in advance

You usually start on tonic, so yes, F#. F# includes: F#, C#, G#, D#, A# and E#. The notes themselves would also fit in E or B.

well the key signature for E major is F#, C#, G# and D#

relative minor is C#

Hmm... Sounds like a blink 182 song...

I can write a coherent tune ... But 3/4? I play rock, not polka.

Well those notes are the tonic, fifth, major sixth, and fourth in both the F# Major, or F# Melodic minor scale, so either one could work.

It's in the key of F# major. A common I - V - vi - IV progression.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.
