So today i accidentally plugged in a 9v AC power adapter to my maxon od-9, normally the only barrel tip plug i have on that strip is the correct one but someone had been using the strip.

So basically, instead of giving it 9v DC it got 9v AC, and now will not work. Since it's truebypass i can get sound out of it when its off, but the second i click it on i get nothing. It still lights up, but no sound.

Did i fry this thing? What if i sent it to keeley or someone and had the chips replaced?
Thanks for any help, im sure my new Kustom Defender 5h will love having that thing in front of it. BTW, love the head. Even with a DS-1 for my high gain sounds.

Wow, if you get nothing with the correct current then you probably fried one of the components. You can probably get it fixed, it just depends on the extent of damage.

Open up the pedal and see if anything looks like it has been burned.
#3
Likely item to have failed (if it uses them) is the protection diode.
It would be near the power source.
Of course, other things can be toasted as well.
#4
You probably be able to see any damage if you look (unless a capacitor blew up), but it's almost guaranteed that you damaged something.

Odd are that it's dead and gone
#5
i opened it up, and didn't see anything friend. no burn marks or places that looked like something could have jumped and shorted it. the light still turns on when i threw a 9v in there... don't see a damn thing thats wrong. maybe send it to keeley or someone and have them replace the chips?

i'd really hate to have to spend the money for a new one, as i was just laid off and have extensive medical bills for my brain tumor and whatnot. but anyways, any ideas?

^^Not dead and gone. Everything in a pedal can be replaced, so it can be made to work properly again.

Like Rob mentioned, it's probably the protection diode that went out, but it could have gotten to some other things as well, electrolytic caps maybe. Open it up and snap some pics.

Edit: There are plenty of people here that can fix it on the cheap if you can't figure it out.

Sorry if I cause any confusion I'm taking an IT computer hardware major and we kinda just toss everything into that category until we actually take a look at it our selves. lol

So sorry about that

Replace the protection diode (say a 1N914). If that doesn't fix it replace the 4558. There isn't really much else that would have blown in there. Both of those components are very inexpensive.

The protection diode ultimately connects to the positive terminal of the battery. Follow the tracks. You do know what a diode looks like don't you?

There should be four or five of those on the board. You need to find the one that connects directly to power.

No diodes around the edge of the board, where all the offboard wires are?

Edit: Your board looks like this, right?

Looks like theres a diode right next to the power jack

Yeah, thats the one! But i only see one colored exactly like that. can you mspaint and circle the one i need to replace? From my battery, it seems they just lead to the board. the black one goes to the input and such first, but then right to the board. sigh, i fear this may be over my head =[

ahhh i do see the little black and silver one by the DC input.

Yep, that'll be the one. I thought they used a small signal diode as a protection diode on those. Anyway, that's the one, replace it. Rob was just telling you what diode to ask for at the shop.

Shouldn't make a difference. If they dont have the 1N4002 just get the 1N4001

sounds good, thank you kind sir! i'm glad i can do a 2 dollar repair as opposed to a 150 dollar replacement =]

If you do have to replace the 4558 do yourself a favour and buy an IC socket for it. Then if you need to replace it in the future (like if you ever want to see for yourself if JRC4558's are better than generic ones) it's a simple matter to pull the old one out and plug in the other one.
Installing an IC socket is no harder than an IC, in fact it's easier because you don't have to worry about heat. Seeing as how you are inexperienced it's just one less thing to worry about.

Well this served as a good refresher on circuit boards, haven't done it in a year and I already forgot most of it lol

Still thank god for diagrams and part lables!

Hopefully that's all thats wrong. If you replace it and it still doesn't work you might end up having to replace the IC

looks like i will have to replace the IC. no idea what that is. ****ing really hoped this diode would fix it....

They really aren't expensive though.

well heck, that sounds amazing! is that something id have to specially order anyways?
is there really any way to find out exactly what is broke so it's not just another shot in the dark, or is this just the logical next thing to check?
