when you are switching barre chords, do you slide your index finger to the next fret or do you lift your index finger and press down again?

Starting out I had to slide the shapes around. After some proficiency, I started lifting and pressing down. The best thing that helped me with barre chords was to fret open chords the same way I would barred.
