Title explains it.
I'm on about post-rock, post-hardcore, post-modern. etc.

Also, what actually makes something 'post-______'
What differentiates it from what it is proceeding?

It's not meant to be taken 100% literally, obviously. Just like "rock music" isn't literally music made by rocks.

Seriously? That's actually it?

Doesn't that mean that nearly everything now is frigging 'post-_____'.
Will we have to start saying 'post-post-_____', or 'double-post-______'.

Maybe this is an argument 'for' the ridding of genre naming systems

I used to play in a band consisting entirely of post office employees. We were labelled "Postcore". We were actually pretty well known in our region, playing regular gigs in the next town over. Eventually, others became influenced by our style, but they took it in a new direction, and created "Post-Postcore".
The "Post-Postcore" movement had a pretty strong underground following, but never saw mainstream success. That was until the most recent wave of bands started adding hardcore elements like breakdowns to the music, creating what is now known as "Post-Postcorecore".

Touché.
I actually do quite like all the post-rock I've heard anyway, mainly Explosions In The Sky. Actually, I think that's all I've heard.
Joy Division are post-punk as well aren't they? I'd physically have sex with one of their albums if I had to.

Yeah, they are.
And EITS are the tits. Same with God is an Astronaut, Mogwai, and many others I'm too lazy to list right now.

I tend to like post-black metal better, though (if only because normal black metal is pretty terrible).

I quite like Maserati, they're apparently a 'post-___' band.

The only thing I've noticed about 'post-rock' is that there aren't many vocals and there's alot of reverbed guitar.

I'll give them two a go, see if it's a one off or not

I don't really like metal anymore I used to love but now I'm more into pop music and shit Like Take That, Robbie Williams, Will Young, Matt Cardle.

Honestly, I have no idea why it's called "post-______" just how I don't know why jazz is called jazz and why metal is called metal. The only thing I know about genre names is that blues is called blues because originally, cotton slaves would sing that style while "having the blues" (sound familiar?).

FYI The Cult are considered Post-Punk and I think they're great.
You are now using UG Black.

Damn this is pretty cool. That Alcest song is dope.

I actually like some black metal though, which is the only kind of metal I enjoy. (Excluding the post- varieties.)

Alcest are pretty good, there have been several references to them in this thread already

That last link is better if you listen to all three parts in order, I only linked part 2. They aren't as "post" as some other bands in this style, but that song is probably the closest they usually get to the post- sound.

The prefix post in this sense means that the instrumentation of a genre is being co-opted for purposes beyond that of which they are normally intended.

Possibly.

I'm glad no one has bastardized post-hardcore in this thread yet.

That's a relief.
