I'm shocked I haven't heard about this on UG yet. Not only is this useless to stop piracy. but is also a risk to our free speech. As musicians, this could also be particularly bad for us.

I disagree with it. It probably won't pass, considering what a fuss everyone will get in over it.

College schedules don't permit enough time to read the entire thing, but from what I've managed to read of the bill, I'm very disturbed this has made it as far as it has. I've never been big on online petitions, but I'd rather do this and feel like I did something than do nothing and bitch about it later.

That said though, guys, I know I'm preaching to a choir of nihilistic apathetic whiny teenagers, but if you really don't want to see this go through, do more than just sign some internet petition, because I guarantee you that alone will be absolutely worthless. I also plan to call and see if I can arrange a meeting with, or at the very least speak over the phone, with my congressman to voice my concerns as a constituent, and raise the point I'm hardly alone. Granted he's been fairly open to hearing members of the community(For example, there was another issue I believe related to the space program I called asking to speak with him about a few years ago. I actually got to speak with him), and I have no idea how common that is, but there's nothing to lose other than a few minutes.

Worst-case scenario, you spend five wasted minutes on the phone. Best-case scenario, you have scheduled a sit-down date with your congressional representative and have a legitimate chance to give them a strong, factual argument about why this bill is horrible.

when is the government going to get it's bleeding money arse out of our lives?!? I dunno about the rest of you guys but I don't need some politician who can't even get his suit on by himself telling me how to live! Small government ftw!

wow that sounded a little more angry and irrational than intended...I apologize ...I do however, believe small government is the way to go. The less the government is in our lives the better....this is going to be yet another project by the gov. to try and control something that it has absolutely no power over...by throwing money and resources at it. Please quote the amendment that this violates, then.

Quote by Constitution
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Completely ignoring the fact that it's business owners who are pushing this, not the government. Also it was proposed by a Republican, a supposedly small-government representative.

And yes, once again the US government demonstrates that it's in the pocket of big business and is willing to sacrifice various human rights for profit. Nobody is surprised.

Granted it's so laced in legalese I guarantee even a lawyer would have trouble deciphering it, but if I've read what I've read properly, right to due process, prohibition of unreasonable search and seizure, right to trial by jury, and maybe freedom of speech. Digging through and quoting the exact passages would take hours.

That about sums it up.
Due Process (sites can be shut down w/o any chance for the owners to plead their case)
Seizure (shut down w/o any warnings)
Trial by jury (just needs a court order)
Freedom of speech (censorship of the internet)

All speech – and expressive conduct – is presumed to be constitutionally-protected unless it falls into one of the following categories: (a) defamation (false statements of fact published to third parties); (b) child pornography; (c) obscenity (see below for further explanation); (d) damaging to national security interests; (e) fighting words; (f) verbal acts (shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater).

The courts have concluded that the above-referenced categories of speech fall outside the ambit of constitutionally-protected expression, and therefore enjoy no First Amendment privileges. Certain other speech-related activity can also be restricted or criminalized, such as the advertising of illegal transactions, solicitation of criminal acts, and threats of bodily harm, such as assault.

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation

The fifth.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

The fourth.
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
