So here are my options, I have a 1x12 V30 extension cab. I play lead, in an very ambient prog metal band, so I need something that can gainy but cleans up some with less volume. Currently, I have a Peavey 6505+ 112, but the transformer died on it. I found some sweet deals, and wonder if it wouldn't just be better just to get another amp.

Peavey Classic 50 Combo -$424
Peavey Ultra Plus Head $379
Peavey XXX Super 40 1x12 - $400
Marshall Haze 40 - $350

I would go XXX, the classic 50 sounds great though, and if you use a pedal for your distortions that might be a good option.

I'm not really familiar with Super 40 xxx, is there a big difference from a normal xxx?

Earlier breakup of cleans, smaller transformer, a 'smaller' sound, less bass, two power tubes instead of four. Still loud.

I'd go for the Ultra and then save for a bigger cab.

Ultra = XXX by the way. They're the same amp (Ultra is older) but because the Ultra is higher wattage, it will be slightly louder, with more bass, an overall fuller sound, and more power tubes.

Nah, they're not the same. The Ultra has a significantly more "vintage" tonality than the XXX. It's less abrasive, less fizzy and has less gain. They're similar, and the XXX is completely based off of the Ultra, but they're still different beasts. It's the 3120 and the XXX that are the same amp.

the wee triple x 40 watts arent the same as the bigger ones. They have there own thing i've heard.
I'd go ultra here tbh
You could put it on half power switch (ah ha clever ehh) until you can afford a bigger cab for the 120 watts
(totally worth running it at full power on any volume though but for safety... )

Re-reading that, I may have exaggerated a little. I was thinking more of the Ultra Plus. The regular Ultra is closer to the XXX - the Ultra Plus is a bit more vintage (and by vintage, I mean 80's, basically. The Ultras do 80's metal excellently).

Well the reason I'm not sure about fixing my 6505 is that it's probably going to be at least $200 plus labor so possibly $300, so barely any more, I can just get another amp.

I wouldnt call the ultra plus's ultra channel 80s voiced
maybe the crunch channel
its a great amp thats already very tight for br00tz
I don't boost mine for br00tz. Only contemplating it for low 7 string tunings..
