im looking into electric guitar at the moment and i need some suggestions on what to get. im probably going to go to gc and browse around but id like a little groundwork to go on when i go there.

i intend to play hard rock to contemporary rockish (if thats even a genre...)

my budget is about $300-400 and an amp is not an issue atm since my friend lent me his line 6.

ive been looking into the Epiphone Limited Edition 1966 G-400.
thanks forthe help! cheers.

lol i have a g-400 and a line 6 amp, they are good, i suggest you play the clean and the crunch channel to get the tones you need.

You might fine a used Schecter C-1 in that range. Not perfect, but it'd be better than the G-400. Check craigslist or eBay. Schecters have pretty bad resell value, so you can get something decent at a good price.

Since you're apparently interested in a hardtail, I'd go with a Les Paul Standard. Very versatile guitar and a true classic. If the Line 6 is a Spider, cool. You might want to check out a Behringer FX-600 multi-effect stomp box. Just my personal recommendations.

He said he's got a budget of $300-$400. Not finding an LP Standard for that... Even if it's on fire. Lol.

$400.00 will buy amazing things on the used market currently.

You shouldn't have any problem finding a used Les Paul standard. I'd go with that, and save a couple hundred bucks.

Where are you located? We can help you find some good deals.

Yes, it's slightly wider. With nut width, you usually have to take it case by case, but in the case of the Epiphone Les Paul Standard vs the Fender Standard Strat, the Les Paul is .03" wider.

I think in everyday nut width terms, the Les Paul is 53mm vs the Strats 52mm.

Tons of options from what I can find. Hopefully someone knowledgable can come along and make sure these are real.

There's also a Les Paul at the GC in Tampa, as well as a few other single cut guitars (Ibanez and PRS SE)

If by "real" you mean a Gibson, of course not! I was referring to an Epiphone... you can find them all day long for $300 or less, even on Amazon!
