Hey, Pit. I got this idea from a few "give me music" threads which have turned up recently, and my recent wanting for new music. I did a few searchbars: nothing. I'm putting it here because the genre isn't specific.

Anyway: share 3 or more bands which you like of any genre which you feel the average Pitmonkey may not have heard of which you love. Therefore, if the band is mentioned here frequently, you probably shouldn't bother sharing it. If not, post it: some will know them, obviously. Format is...

Band - Genre and brief description
Youtube link

Heres a few to start off:

Joanna Newsom - Folk mainly on a harp: lyrically intricate and very relaxing/catchy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYl0uLrXP7U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ow-qImCrD5E&feature=related

Shining - Norwegian Avant-Garde Metal which fuses Black Metal, Industrial and Jazz.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQ7Fh_Y2Lkg

The Dear Hunter - Indie/Experimental Rock. Very good, and their discography is one long concept album IIRC.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqQ7kRj-vqY

Structures - Progressive Metalcore. Pretty good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1qeZ_lb2Dc

Have A Nice Life - Post-Industrial Shoegaze. excellent.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F44xQcbvdds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEsbcLOeVCw&feature=related

This will either be awesome or terrible, but eh, give it a go.

Anyway, I'll post what I always post, because I love this band so much and feel they should get more recognition.

Over The Top - Hardcore band with Pop Punk influences, sounding surprisingly not like scene kids

Summer Ahn! is my favourite track by them, but the only way you can hear it is by streaming on Bandcamp.

As a fan of Korpiklaani (my favorite folk-metal band), I enjoyed Ensiferum.

R Stevie Moore - I've heard him do every genre and he's great at them all... and he's got 400 freaking albums, haha. He's fantastic, my second all time favorite musician, next to Neil Young.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLuC_6xnVRw

Dogbowl - He is his own genre. there is nothing else like this that I've ever heard.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y8Z9QmxzAY&feature=related

Daniel Johnston - Not sure about genre, but I really really love his piano stuff. Innocent lyrics and gorgeous melodies make me cry. so honest.......

NEU!
The best of the "Krautrock" movement, one of the best bands ever. Music as water, time, flowing forever.

TELEVISION
A jam band in the guise of a proto-punk/punk/post-punk band; don't be fooled, there's plenty of guitar heroism. Marquee Moon is the greatest album you will ever listen to.

WILD FLAG
Indie rock/punk rock; S-K superstars + magic fairy queen team up for catchy hooks & some psyched-out jamming. Hipsters pretend like it's a let down, but they're just mad 'cuz Carrie Brownstein makes fun of them on TV now.

I've heard most of these bands already, I've mentioned Giraffes? Giraffes! on here more than once.

Fireworks - Melodic Hardcore - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEH5ryuxALA

Barrakuda McMurder - Amazing Pop-Punk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHY1eMz_vaM
Also check out, "I Broke Up With My Girlfriend (So I Could Write a Pop-punk Song About it) it's not on YT though.

Hyperaptive - Underground UK Rapper - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4qxy-pfBDk

Marquee Moon sucks shit.
Boring pseudo punk.
Long ass songs.
Shitty guitar solos (he should get a lesson from buckethead or smth).
Just awful.

I must inquire on your opinion of bands that sound similar to folk metal such as Alestorm (pirate metal!) and Flatfoot 56 (kinda like a heavier Flogging Molly).

Seriously, as I read the thread the first band I thought to post was Structures, as I'm listening to them right now. But TS beats me to it >_>

Anyways..

Volumes - Progressive metal. Djent-y in a sense. Atmospheric sound at points. Probably for fans of TesseracT.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o236oBARyFQ

Vildhjarta - Thall. Well, that's what they call themselves. Again, djent-style. Very similar to Meshuggah, but involves a lot of spacey guitar work to create a very atmospheric tone to every song. Lots of layering. Any Meshuggah fan should love 'em instantly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drALbzXjHK4

Uneven Structure - Another atmospheric progressive band. Similar to TesseracT, again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbLz5lNcHi0

So there's my "djent" dump

Other shit.

Dead Letter Circus - Not really sure what to describe them as. The only band in the "genre" I've ever really gotten into.. They're from Aus and are starting to get a lot of attention which they deserve.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2GAW87Jmw0

EkoTren - Metalcore/Hardcore, but not generic.. Again, I don't really know how to describe them. I saw them live with Ill Nino, they stole the show and have become one of my favorites.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W81uX9RbGts

Kvelertak - An amazing little band from Norway, starting to get attention as well. Found 'em just through a tiny ad in Decibel magazine. Fell in love instantly. They've been described as anything from black metal, to hardcore punk, to rock n' roll.. Decide for yourself.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDyHhV9UK-4

Hopefully nothing I posted has been posted already.

Yeah certain people on this forum (*cough cough*) never shut up about how they suck from the succulent teat of Marquee Moon, but it doesn't do much for me. I was mostly kidding with my mock-review up there, but I'm not really a fan.

Just awful.

I'll trust you, considering "just awful" seems to describe most of your musical tastes. You have experience (I can be a pretentious twat and italicize too, look mom!).

Busdriver. Raps with some impressive finesse and speed, and his lyrical content has some substance. He tends to vary things up and manage to make his songs interesting from a musical standpoint (which hip hop isn't really the best for). He claims to be underground enough throughout his discography that I feel it is probably safe to post him itt.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_x-JfNQ__Y

The Arkells. I'm not the best with genres, but I'm pretty sure it is indie rock or something. They aren't particularly groundbreaking or innovating, but they are cool guys who make some cool tunes as well. Cool story of the post, bro: Their lead singer actually came into my buddies guitar class in Waterdown and fucked around with them for a lesson (his guitar teacher was the ex drummer of the Philosopher Kings or something, so they were tight I guess). Anyways, I caught them live at Edgefest during the summer and I doubt people know them outside of my little gta bubble, so check it yo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PzJtu1WB3E&feature=related

The Rural Alberta Advantage. Probably indie something or another. Mostly acoustic/keys stuff, and they have a drummer who can do some interesting beats for the type of low key music they do. I only know who they are because this hipster chick I was trying to get with dragged me to see them. They actually didn't suck, which was surprising considering half the shit they sung about had to do with missing Edmonton of all places.

I wouldn't, because, even if I don't really care for it, Marquee Moon is an important album so it's at least worth checking out.

If you liked that song you might as well check out the album its on. Temporary Forever.

Cosmic Cleavage is also the shit. His old stuff is infinitely more entertaining, after Fear of a Black Tangent he got a lot less interesting.

Yeah genghis, I'm calling you a hipster. You are some awkward skinny white kid who goes on /mu/ to talk about music and shape your taste to that pathetic little hipster culture that stagnates there. I just like verbose and interesting rap and Busdriver fits that.

Do you also like dipping your dick into various vats of acid? The Beatles are bad and you should feel bad. Go listen to Of Montreal or some other band that doesn't suck.

^Relative to you, probably.
