played one the other day in dawsons in liverpool and i liked the feel of it, couldn't hear it much as there was some pleb at the back of the shop who clearly had a blackstar or something maxed the gain and decided he wanted the whole shop to hear how br00talz his shredding tekkers were...

so didn't have a chance to hear the thing acoustically, and didn't fancy playing about with amps etc so got out of there after 10 minutes or so.

i'm after a sound like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ91QqkS9MQ
(john mayer - come when i call: live in LA)

budget of £350 ABSOLUTE max.

current gear:
Vox VT50 (boutique clean setting, 1/3 gain so it doesn't distort all that much)
marshall - the gu v'nor
digitech screamin' blues
EHX small clone
SHO clone
Vox V847 wah

bought but not arrived yet:
mxr m108 - 10 band EQ
danelectro fish n chips EQ
digitech whammy

so am i able to get that kind of sound from the dot royale with my current amp and pedals?

also is it a good guitar for the price? (bear in mind, andertons are also offering a free epi dot hardcase with it)

are there any others i should look at within my price range?

cheers =)

That John Mayer tone is very BB King like, and as John Mayer is more associated with a Strat then a big hollowbody, I can base some of this one King's tone.

As both of them are known for using big Fender combos (King's Twin and Mayer's Super Reverb and Vibrolux), I'm going to say that you won't be able to match their tone as well with a Vox VT50. However, you'll be able to "fake it" using the Super 4x10 amp model on it with a little bit of drive.

So yeah, I'm going to say yes, you'll be able to get the sound that you want from the Dot Royale, with the current gear you have.
Actually, I go by Dave, but there are already too many Daves on this forum.

Fender MIM Stratocaster
Fender Jaguar Bass
Epiphone EJ200 Super Jumbo
Fender Excelsior 13w
Acoustic B300HD (with matching 1x12 cab)
BOSS BD-2W
NYC Big Muff Pi

Another scouser? I live at Marybone. i go to that Dawsons for strings all the time. I think i've even seen the very guitar you're interested in.

I doubt the Draco that they have there will ever sell in a million years.

About your guitar question...

Perhaps before you decide to get anything, you should play some more semi hollows in your price range. If you can get to Manchester, go to PMT. They have hundreds of guitars there that you can try and you don't even have to ask. It wouldn't hurt to keep your options open. I buy all my gear from that place.

yeh it's just a shame i can't really be ar*ed going to manchester...

i used to always be a dolphin music guy but they went and shut down... preferred it there because they weren't at all nazi with people walking in and picking guitars off the walls and playing them in the corner. as opposed to dawsons, which as you say, are anal about that kind of thing.

and yeh seen that draco, anyone who buys it deserves to be heavily pointed and laughed at.

will check the PMT website but also a browse around GAK, thing is, as you probably expect, i wanna play it before i pay a penny.

also here's a few others i've seen on GAK

feedback mucho appreciated:

Epiphone Wildkat

epiphone ES-175

Epiphone ES-339

Ibanez ES73T

Peavey Rockingham

Stagg A300 (white or sunburst)

Washburn HB35

i'm leaning towards either the wildkat, ES-175 or ES-339 if i were to not get the Dot Royale.

but anyone else got any further ideas/suggestions or any feedback on the above guitars, either would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

The old Dolphin place was so much better than Dawsons.

Trying before you buy is exactly what PMT allows you to do. The great thing about that place is the sheer number of guitars you can try. I've played many, many of the guitars there. They tend to specialise in Epi, Gibson, Fender, PRS, Jackson and Schector. They have a few ESP's there and the occasional Musicman and Gretsch. So they have a great range of instruments you can try. Honestly, its worth going there just to have a look. They have a shitton of amps you can use too, no questions asked.

I mean, its your money at the end of the day, but it might be worth looking at other guitars in your price range that you can actually have a go with.

yeh i'll see about paying a visit there but the train there and back is about £20 and that'd be £20 wasted if i got nothing, spesh on the 22nd of december... the day i got off work to go shopping xD

seen these 2 in a shop in chester

http://backalleymusic.co.uk/contents/en-uk/p3388_hofner-contemporary-verythin-cherry.html

hofner contemporary verythin

and

http://backalleymusic.co.uk/contents/en-uk/p4785_hagstrom-hj500.html

Hagstrom HJ500

which is a nice guitar, just not sure if it'll match the sound of the epi dot...

but yeh if i could get to PMT and i got paid earlier than the 22nd december then i would do... but sadly on that day, i've gotta do a lil bit of christmas shopping so dawsons is really the only decent music shop, ok there's curly but that's metalhead central let's be honest... any other guitar shops in and around l.pool that i don't know about???

I'm probably not the best guy to give advice on semi-hollows, as i'm an 80's-90's rock/metal player admittedly. Sorry.

The Epiphone semi-hollows are really nice guitars for the price from what many people here say. But the best thing to do is obviously to go play one. With PMT, you're the most likely to find the exact model you're looking for. Dawsons here is extremly limited in comparison.

I've been to Curly before. Its terrible. They have nothing but shitty Dimebag guitars there, so i didn't bother after a first look at the place. I wouldn't be seen dead with them.

There isn't a lot of other shops nearby. Except perhaps Apollo Music in Birkenhead, but that place is tiny. They mostly do Fenders (and shitty dime guitars) there.

yeh i work in b.head and walk past it on my way home almost daily, it's the worlds worst music shop, apart from wirral music in liscard... which is even worse and probably illegal... (went to KGB to set my guitar up after the guy at wirral music messed it up, they asked if he still had certain gutiars for sale, which he did and they said he brought them in for insurance valuation, they said that the truss rod in one was snapped the other had terrible neck warp and were thus rendered next to no value but he's still selling one of them for £650 which is a hofner hollowbody bass and the other for £1400 which is a USA tele. both used btw...) but yeh, there's not much in the way of guitar shops around, though cash converters behind lime street isn't too bad, sometimes you can possibly get something nice there but the chances are unlikely.

so looks like i'll be having a harder look at the PMT website when i get home, and poss browsing through ebay or reviews on here.

just looking forward to getting home xD

edit: also the prior post was a general question, not specifically asking you, don't wanna burden you with pressure :P
