Hey guys, just looking for some input on a decision I'm making.

I am currently playing through a Peavey Valveking 100 watt head. I use a bad monkey on the low gain channel to push it into metal territory and I'm generally happy with the tone I'm getting from it.

However, I've seen an advert for a Line 6 Spider Valve 100watt head with an fbv express footswitch for €300.

The reason why I am thinking of purchasing the Spider Valve is that the build in effects would be very handy for me, it also has a built in noise gate and I could boost my leads etc.. I am curious if I could get a sufficient metal tone from it, either matching the Valveking tone or surpassing it.

Here is an example of the kind of metal I play (I'm using a 6505 on this recording, but unfortunately I can't afford one just at the moment. haha)

Any help would be appreciated to help me make an informed decision on this.
Thanks guys!

The fx on the spiders are no where near as good as a pedal would be, and the built in noise gates on most amps I have seen with them on do very little.

I would save up till you can get a better amp and get stand alone pedals too.

But the spider valve is a much better amp than a combo spider.

if you use an overdrive on the clean channel for your rhythm sound why not get the footswitch to change channels and use the high gain channel as a boost for your leads? if you're happy with your current sound then as mentioned get some fx and stick with what you have or save and get the 6505 which really seems to be what you need.

Looks like I get to play dickhead again

1.) What cab are you using with the VK?
2.) Why the low gain jack?
3.) Are you doing the dummy jack trick?
4.) Is there anything in your loop now?
5.) The Spider Valve and Valveking are totally different.
6.) What kind of metal do you play?
7.) I'm not watching your youtube clip.
8.) Posting Youtube vids is often considered spam for people to get more hits FYI
9.) If you are going for a 6505 tone then why not buy one?
10.)What kind of effects do you think you need?

1.) What cab are you using with the VK?

Bugera 4X12 200 Cab

2.) Why the low gain jack?

I'm not using the low gain jack, I just meant I'm not using the gain boost.

3.) Are you doing the dummy jack trick?

No, I've tried it before and notice little or no difference.

4.) Is there anything in your loop now?

Boss Digital Delay

5.) The Spider Valve and Valveking are totally different.

I never claimed they were similar.

6.) What kind of metal do you play?

Similar to bands such as arch enemy, lamb of god etc.

7.) I'm not watching your youtube clip.
8.) Posting Youtube vids is often considered spam for people to get more hits FYI

I have no desire for my bands youtube video to get more hits, I just thought it would be easier for people to offer advice if they knew what kind of tone I was going for.

9.) If you are going for a 6505 tone then why not buy one?

I am on a budget.

10.)What kind of effects do you think you need?

Digital Delay and some decent reverb are all I really need. A noise suppressor is useful.

There's a low gain jack on the VK? News to me. I've tried plugging into both jacks but haven't really noticed a difference. The only easy trick I've done is activating the effects loop, even without pedals.

As for the thread... I may be a fanboy but The Valveking is the best amp I've ever owned. Sure it's not the best I've tried but the gain turned up with a OD = great tone IMO. I prefer the distortion on this amp to many others, including all modelling I've tried, which includes the Spider Valve.

The VK brings it back to basics (it needs mods) and it's not a metal amp by itself, but with a boost, EQ, noise gate this amp is a really solid choice, especially since the cleans are pretty nice too.

he misspoke and meant he used the gain channel without the gain boost on. agree on the VK being better sound wise than most modeling amps especially in it's price range.

I'm starting to lean towards keeping the VK for now and investing in an EQ pedal and an ISP decimator. Until I can afford to buy a 6505.

I had a boss ns-2, korg pitchblack, and a boss eq which were all stolen at a gig. I suppose it's about time I replaced them.

I've tried a few Bugera amps, I particularly like the 333xl and the 6260

I'm a big fan of the SV. Peavey always just didn't seem like the best quality till you get the higher end gear. As Is the same with a lot of other brands. I Think The SV gets a lot of hate and most people haven't tried it. Go try them out and see what you can get from both.

Take the money you would spend on those pedals, sell the head, get an used 6505/5150

Why settle for an imitation of what you want?

Half the price, sounds identical with a better clean channel and soon the infinium technology which everyone is raving about.
