Takayoshi Ohmura does this thing where he picks notes really fast on the neck pickup, then at some notes he switches to the bridge pickup and back to the neck pickup reeeeeaally fast. Like how he does in this video, mostly seen at 2:38 onward.

why does he do that?

Also how do I make that really nasty sound at the beginning of alot of his licks. In this song particularly when the dirty tone kicks in, h does that really awesome nasty sound.

It looks like he picks the strings upward and and then rakes down up to the note hes going to hit. When I try this I sound like a terrible piece of crap. What exactly is he doing to get that sound?

1. I think he's probably just hitting it by accident. You can see him sort of throw his hand out after he picks a note and sustains it a little bit. Sometimes he hits it, sometimes he doesn't.

2. Yeah, those are rakes. He'll also palm mute the note before he hits it sometimes, which gives it a sort of staccato or disjointed rhythm.

I might add that he's pretty sick for a rhythm guitarist.

No, he's doing it to get different tones out of his guitar...
it's to provide tonal difference to the ears...the same attack/volume and "curve" of the sound to the ears all the time makes the listener "tired" and you loose focus and stop paying attention.
IF however, you vary the picking attack/pickups/phrasing/wah/effects/ etc. etc. etc. every few seconds it keeps the listener/watcher VERY engaged because it doesn't know what to expect next.

Yngwie does it a lot...and judging by this fellow's scalloped neck and playing style, he's very influenced by Yngwie.

It's taste too...about the song/style/thing you're trying to achieve with a particular song/sound!

Rock on!

^ that's totally correct. the dude looks like a Yngwie (except fat, ego and hair and race, other than that, the guitar, scallops, the picking style and all...)

also he seemed to really hit the switch by accident a couple of times cause the switching for one note is just a hassle nobody's gonna go thru... and to be honest for those said one notes on bridge pup, the difference wasn't drastic

1.) He's doing it on purpose. If you listen, he changes pickups at certain bends to accentuate the raised note.

2.) It's a simple strike of the strings while they're muted with high gain.

Actually I've seen people very definitely do it on purpose, just because you can't hear the difference doesn't mean he can't.

it does look like its on purpose, but i really dont see why hed do it for only a small fraction of a second.

as much as i strike the muted string and accent that note, it still doesnt have that nasty bite to it. Maybe its my tone

Given that you're using a Schecter with humbuckers through a Peavey and he's using an ESP Custom strat copy and a high-end Hughs & Kettner of some kind, you're not going to get the same kind of tone as him, no. His is going to have a lot more high-end bite to it just by the nature of the instrument and there's nothing you can do about that short of getting a strat of your own.

He might like the attack of one pickup and the body of the other on some notes, I can easily see that personally even though I'm not that picky myself.
