Where did they fall into metal genre wise? Alt-metal? Were/are they technically metal at all?

No one really called them metal in their heyday because "metal" was kind of a bad word in the mid 90's. Most people considered them to be a heavy alt rock band... with influences in metal, hardcore and a little jazz and fusion.

Great band.

I've always thought of them as a post-hardcore/metal band. They definitely have some alternative rock elements.
