It's been a while since I've been in this forum...

Hello all, my Peavey Valveking is in need of a new set of tubes. The stock tubes are approaching 3 years old(yikes!) and while nothing has blown/or is sounding weak, I feel a change up is in order.

If you don't know, the Valveking features 3 12AX7 preamp tubes and 4 6L6GC poweramp tubes.

Obviously my question is to ask this simply; what are the best brand of pre and poweramp tubes on the market? Most durable? Best sounding? I've heard good things about Electro-Harmonix.

I'd love to hear your opinions. Thanks in advance for any recommendation.

I own a VK112, this isn't what I use but I imagine it would be quite good.

JJ 6L6GC for power amp

for pre:

1. NOS Mullard 12AX7
2. JJ 12AX7
3. Penta 12AT7 or a JAN 5751

feel free to swap the preamp tubes around.

What are the advantages of using 3 different types of pre-amp tubes instead of 3 of the same ones?

you should read through the front page of The Valveking Thread and then the associated Wiki pages. This stuff is well documented. The reason people mix up the preamp tube selections is because it sounds better that way

I've got some JJ's on there way to me. I have a 3 preamp tubes I pulled out of an old tube radio i'm gonna tyr in my 212. There's 1 RCA, 1 Raytheon and one no name preamp tube i'm gonna try. The RCA and Raytheon date back to the 50's and 60's the best I could tell. The other tube just has a number stamped on it.
Guitars:
Agile AL 3000
Alvarez AD60SC
Ibanez GRX20
Squire Standard Strat

Amp:
Peavey Valveking 2x12

Effects:
Digitech Grunge
Behringer Tube Overdrive TO800
Digitech GNX3

Sounds good! NOS tubes are the best.
