I've never tried it, but I use inkscape and it works pretty good. Is sketchup free?

yes its free, and yes it is quite good, you only really need to get the hang of it before you can do anything, it really takes time getting used to

I used it when I was at school. It's a pretty good stepping stone to bigger and more expensive programs, but don't expect to get great 3D renders or accurate contours on it. I found it great at the time, but now that I use SolidWorks and Pro/E I wouldn't touch it again.

On a side note: Another thread? Really?

Not even close. You can get an educational license for around $100, which has pretty much everything in it and it lasts for a year. The full version costs upwards of $10,000 though - probably not something you would buy for home use.
