Most frontman are the most popular member of the band because, as the singer, they carry the image of the band with him. In behind the scenes videos, the frontman is usually the one most interacted with by the cameras. Promotional material usually features the singer. Media plays a big part in deciding who the most important piece of the band is.

What are some bands in which the singers are not the most popular member? Off the top of my head, I can think of

Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen
Angus Young - AC/DC
Slash - Guns N' Roses

They're all guitarists though

I wanted to prove you wrong, but when I thought about it, I couldn't think of bands where each band member wasn't equally respected.

You seriously think Ozzy isn't more popular than the rest of Sabbath?

I meant during the 70s, before he launched his mega solo career.

EDIT: I think the thread is about current status so I guess you're probably right anyway.

Dream Theater - Anyone but LaBrie.
Slipknot?
Nevermore... Jeff Loomis (guitarist) pretty much stole that show .
Seventh Wonder - Johan Liefvandahl (guitarist)/Andreas Blomqvist (bassist).
THE NIBIRUAN - All of them except Jules Näveri.
Periphery - Misha 'Bulb' Mansoor (Guitarist).
Possibly Rush...

^^ Animals as Leaders is instrumental. You can't be liked more than a singer that doesn't exist...

AC/DC yes. Most people don't even know that the lead singers name is Brian Johnson.
And if you're talking about the Bon Scott era well then I believe it's equal representation between Angus and Bon.

I'm surprised no one has said Steve Harris in Iron Maiden yet.

We also have Scott Ian in Anthrax, and possible Kerry King in Slayer, buts that's debatable.

Pantera to with Dimebag, but that's a different story.

Chicken Foot with Satriani.

And any band that George Lynch has played in.

Red Hot Chili Peppers (Flea)
Primus (Les)
Metallica (Due to the napster thing, I think everyone knows Lars more than James)
Rage Against The Machine (Tom, maybe)

The Mars Volta - Omar Rodriguez Lopez

King Crimson - Robert Fripp (although the singers change he's still more recognisable)

EDIT: ^ I think Frusciante is better known than Flea too but he's not the singer either.

I think the majority of people that know Maiden would be more likely to like Bruce over Steve.

Nightwish, at least now. Tuomas and Marco are easily more known than Anette

I think most of the guys in Maiden all have the fans that prefer them, Janick might be the lowest of the bunch. Bruce Steve and Adrian really are the main 3 to me, with Dave right below followed by Nicko and Janick.

Stratovarius maybe, Tolkki might be a little more well known than Kotipelto, but not by much.

I would say Kai Hansen maintained recognition in Helloween after Kiske joined, but I could be wrong.

Herman Li in Dragonforce is obviously more popular than either singer.

I think if people really only recognize the frontman, they are really not that into the band. Singers probably idolize Ozzy over Tony, but guitar players probably like Iommi better.

True I guess. But most people (I know) who listen to ACDC are generally die hards who could name every drummer they've gone through

AC/DC has just had too much of a revolving line-up in general

The only person who has stayed with them for every tour and album is Angus. I know Malcolm had to miss a tour because he was in rehab for alcoholism.

Sammy Hagar is much more widely known to non-musicians than Satch.

Speaking of Scott Ian, he's probably more popular than Keith Buckley is in the Damned Things as well.

You could probably make the argument that Keith Richards is more popular than Mick Jagger as well, but I'd say that one is a toss up honestly.
