Hey guys, I'm just surfing the web as I always do when I first wake up, and I clicked a link that took me to cracked. Once I opened cracked I instantly got a virus warning from my firewall and promptly closed it. EVerything else I have open (UG and Long and McQuades website) have been open for at least a half hour before so it can't be them.

My question is, have you ever gotten a virus warning or attack from Cracked.com?

Probably from an advertisement somewhere on their page

No, Cracked is as safe as any popular website. You sure you didn't click a link that went to a "fake" version of cracked?

Doesn't matter. I'v gotten virus warnings like that from ads on UG. It happens.

If you're worried about it, just run a virus scan real quick and check.

I'm not worried, I have like 16 firewalls. I was just curious, since I frequent cracked at work everyday.

This, the site may be secure but they're loading code from an outside server they have no control over, which may or may not be secure. It happens all the time, there was an instance of it happening on the official superbowl website during the superbowl a while back, which ended up getting a couple million people infected with a virus.

It's one legitimate reason to use an adblocker besides "I don't like ads."

...Why? Firewalls only stop unwanted port access, they don't stop viruses.

I thought firewall was a blanket statement, sorry. I have two anti-viruses, one firewall and a couple lesser things like ad-blockers and such.

I know that.

He could have gotten a virus that only affected a PC or something.

Typically not as easily though. While apple messed up the natural security of unix, it's still a unix-based system which is really good with permissions. Viruses aren't a big a problem simply because it's harder to work around (apple's already lax) security privilages. Although at defcon they managed to root a mac in 10 seconds...

Ah, okay. Yeah, no, they're not blanket statements, antivirus and firewalls are two discrete things, even though they're usually bundled together.

...This thread made me realize I spend waay too much time with computers.
