tenor trombone is my main instrument, but low brass is all pretty similar, and I can play trumpet reasonably so alto trombone/french horn are within my grasp.

ofc, all i can afford is a cheap trumpet, decent tenor, and a decent bass

This may be completely unhelpful, but....what helped me was knowing perfect fifths from any note.

Before I came across the circle of fifths I learned perfect fifths as an interval. I just practiced them on my instrument, I practiced saying them, I practiced singing them and I would test myself with pen and paper (In both directions too up and down). It didn't take long to get them memorized.

It was later I learned about the circle of fifths and when I read about the concept of the circle of fifths there was no study involved other than understanding what I was reading, there was no need for mnemonics. The concept made sense and that was it.
