Check out this video. I know some would have already seen it. It shows how the string actually vibrate.

Any science to it?

Actually, it shows the the strings doesn't vibrate.. Read the text..

they dont vibrate like that. like it said in the article, it only looks like that in he photo because of the way the camera works

This. Plus if the strings actually vibrated like that, the sound would be incredibly high... maybe even inaudible. Think of it tis way, if you play an open string, the whole length from the nut to the bridge is vibrating synchronously so that at the 12th fret there is the greatest length of oscillation back and forth.

Still looks pretty cool though. I'm sure you could find some other things that would have a similar looking effect with that camera. I'd look if I had an iphone
