Yeah - you've got the power to set an education curriculum for your nation's children and teenagers. What subjects would you make compulsory? Which would be optional? Would you radically change the education structure?

Personally, I'd try to reduce the amount of time taught on design and technology, art, drama and music. I'd divert funds so students interested in the arts could pursue them at their own will as extra curricula activities in greater focus.

I'd consider how politics, economics and logic could be brought in as subjects in a manner appropriate for under 16s. Religious education would become religion and ethics, looking at ethical philosophy, religious philosophy and religions of the world, all in a secular manner. (As in, not religiously based.)

Proper sex education too. Openly bring in topics about gender, contraception, sexuality, remove myths about sex and more.

Just some ideas there. What would you guys do?

Drop (make them optional) the languages apart from the home language and english. Make music, arts and gym optional. Give much more maths, science etc. Anyone below an 8 on average gets sent to another school or another level.

I would increase the natural sciences, and most of all, make sure qualified teachers are hired in those disciplines, something that is not always done today.
We should start calling it "The Fact of Evolution", theory, even though correct, does not work with the ignorant..

That's stupid.

Do you know how many children there are? How the hell would you cater to each of them individually?

Sex/Health ed sucks. Huge waste of time. All I did was troll the teachers in those classes (they always took shit way too seriously/no sense of humor). Don't care about the rest.

Yeah, it was similar for me. However there's reason to believe that open, liberal approaches to sex education can seriously do a nation well for a number of reasons, including reducing teenage pregnancy. It'd also be nice to reinforce a liberal attitude towards non-heterosexual students, and also provide non-heterosexual students with the sex education they deserve. Also could help demystify not being straight.

Honest talk about sex drives, how awkward sex can be could also be handy as well. Destroy a few myths, including how good sex doesn't necessarily end with orgasms for both/one party. Just stick kids in a lecture hall and make them listen to you to minimise silly classroom responses. (Not hard, it's sex ed.)

So they were taught badly in your school. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be taught, it means we should re-evaluate how they're taught. Kinda the point the TS was trying to make.
And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust? Man delights not me: no, nor woman neither... nor women neither.

The requirement of more social studies and less mathematics classes. Also less focus on grades and more on the actual learning. All they do now is really teach the importance of state test scores and the like. That shouldn't be the motivation for learning.

Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with how it is now other than shitty teachers and shitty children who don't want to learn in the first place.

I like the sound of that, Craig. I'd seriously beef up language teaching, probably from primary age, and make it mandatory until leaving age.

EDIT: ^ With that logic, we could remove most things from the curriculum, as odds are, at least one kid will find them dull.

Pretty much this, if the person wants to learn something, he will, regardless of having a shitty teacher.

There's so many myths surrounding sex, including with many sexually experienced adults. It wouldn't be a waste of time to correct them.

EDIT: An example. It took me years before I found out that women's sex drives are like men. I have a high sex drive and found myself with people with lower sex drives. It reinforced the belief that men had higher sex drives until I actually had honest conversations with friends about sex. And I've seen odd examples where men have honestly been sceptical of their partner because they had a higher sex drive than they did. A girl with a higher sex drive? Bound to quite possibly cheat, apparently. That's not helpful misinformation. Two minutes could solve that.

If that's to me, yes I realize that. My point is that you guys need to realize that not everyone share your interests. And TS, what you propose is bordering on propoganda. Let people reach their own conclusions on shit like homosexuality.

Not entirely true. A shitty teacher can easily kill the motivation to learn for anyone and it's hard to get it back after it happens.

I would have grammar, logic, and mathematics/geometry beaten into the children from a young age. Make classes on relationships/marriage/parenting required, as well as sexual/health education. Requirement on a course of multicultural values.

American schools definitely need to get with the times in mathematics. My Pre-Calc teacher in high school was from Ireland and taught us much easier/understandable methods than the retarded textbook.

Also, we need to give up on not using the metric system and centigrade.

Serious. You can have sex without finishing whilst still enjoying it. Sex can also involve finishing half way in and ending without going again. A fair portion of women fake whilst being satisfied with their sex lives. However, it can be demoralising if you enforce that you have to finish in order for it to be complete sex. That's silly and unnecessary.

Media studies as it's taught now is basically just an hour off for the students and time to catch up on marking coursework for the teachers. It needs to be either chopped out of the curriculum or the entire subject overhauled, and teachers who actually specialise in teaching it hired, as at least in my school, all media studies teachers were primarily teachers of other subjects who picked up an easy extra to stick on their CV, or new-to-the-jobbers who were using it as a stepping stone in their career.

I don't give a shit about math, but it's still important. Granted, the sex stuff is less important, but I think that is part of Craig's point. People misconceptions on sex cause them to place much importance on it but in the wrong areas, and it actually affects their lives.
