When I was 14 or 15, we were decorating the house for Halloween and my mom put on one of those Music Choice television stations. She kept switching between Arena Rock and Metal Mania on VH1. This is where I heard Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Dokken, Skid Row, and such. I told her I liked it so she dug out all of her old cassettes and vinyls and let me listen. Soon after, I started playing guitar, learning songs from these artists.

tl;dr: I know that there is a "cliche" about parents hating their kids music and vice versa but has anyone's parents here actually showed them music you still play/listen to?

Don't think I've ever crossed musical boundaries with my mother.

I discovered RHCP by looting a box under my step dads desk, and finding a live concert cassette tape. And a stack of porn.

It was a good afternoon.

My parents had pretty good music taste in my opinion. They listened to Deep purple, the 5th dimension, mamas and the papas, Jim Croce, beatles... etc. When i was a teen i was into punk and hardcore but as i got older i grew to appreciate the music that was playing in our house when i was young.

I guess going through my dad's old CD's I discovered Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens Lynyrd Skynnyrd and such and from there branched out to a bunch of different stuff. But I also learned from that that I strongly dislike Randy Travis, George Strait and such and for a long time it made me think I disliked country music, but it turned out I only like country if its good.

My mom likes country and classic rock. My dad listens to 60's psychedelic rock, jazz, Zappa, and everything Clapton. I've always preferred my dad's taste.

My mums been listening to pop music since the 60's. My dad's a big Irish traditional fan plus he got me into Rory Gallagher. I thank my brother for my music tastes.
#10
My dad has shown me tons of classical (western art for you snobs) music. I have nothing in common with my mom musically.
Check out my band Disturbed

My dad turned me onto tons of music when I was younger. Until about 2005 I hardly knew what the hell 90s music was, with the exception of Nirvana, AIC, and such that my dad was into. Now when popular songs form the 90s are played my friends are all like, "Oh I remember listening to this on the radio when I was younger." I look at them with a blank face because said song has never been heard by me.

It's funny at times.
#13
My mom got me into 80s metal and 80s pop when I was a kid....I have now returned the favor by getting her into metalcore XD
My dad and I have almost no musical similarities
#14
My dad got me into a lot of early stuff that has shaped my diverse taste nowadays. He always listened to Zappa, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, The Stones, Paul Kelly, etc. I've had this kind of stuff around me my whole life, so it was inevitable that I'd eventually start to enjoy it.
#15
My parents taste is completely different in every way than mine. I like all the classic rock and metal (led zeppelin, van halen, sabbath, etc) but i got into them on my own instead of my parents introducing the to me sadly. My dad likes taylor swift and celtic women which i hate and my mom likes pop and carly simon... also hate.

Parents enjoyed country, classic rock and pop. I grew up shut off from great music, lol. As soon as I moved on, I went straight to metal, techno, dubstep, etc. So much so that I got depressed and had to cut back. Now for some reason I listen to Folk/Punkgrass/Blues Rock which I'm okay with. I feel if I hadn't gone so extreme that I wouldn't have landed here. I now play guitar, bass, banjo, mandolin, ukulele and piano. I'm planning on learning harmonica, violin, cello, dobro, and anything I can get my hands on!

My mom got me into Styx a few years ago, one of my favorite bands today

And my dad is a music nut, but he never played any music for me when I was younger, and I don't know why.

My parents introduced me to Pink Floyd and other such "classic rock" type bands, but I think I lost them when I started blasting Sonic Youth...

Not from my mom, because the music she listens to is shit.

But my step-dad listens to a lot of classic rock/older metal bands (Metallica, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, etc.), so I picked up a lot of my musical taste from him.

Mom listens to whatever is playing. She has things eh likes and things she dislikes but no passionate feelings one way or the other.
Dad listens to a bit more country influenced music than I do, not like straight up country but stuff that has a tinge of it like John Prine or James McMurtry, and my tastes are a bit more punk influenced than his, but other than that we agree on most everything. I still appreciate hsi stuff a lot and he appreciates mine. He's the guy who showed me Springsteen, The Ramones, Costello, R.E.M., Tom Waits and a lot of other stuff, so I owe him something at least. I can kinda see my taste becoming more like his when I get older because it seems like his was more like mine when he was younger.
Step-dad listens to stuff like Led Zeppelin and Stevie Ray. I like it but he's kinda in the same mentality he was when he was 17 when he starts listening to music, so I don't totally get it.
My step-mom listens to shitty African music and Matisyahu.

The Guess Who, Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, and a few other bands and individual songs in common with my mom. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ram Jam, various other Southern Rock bands in common with with my dad. Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and some others in common with both.

My brother is the different one. He likes the shit all over music channels and some of the radio now.
#23
My dad got me into Black Sabbath, Coldplay, and Guns N' Roses, and my mom got me into AC/DC, I really like their musical tastes.

my mom is straight out of the 80's. she likes all that awful big hair crap. you know, Bon Jovi. that and songs like that awful Christmas Shoes song because they're so boo-hoo sad and make her cry.

my dad is all over the place. he got me into some of my favorite bands when i was younger. (Dead Kennedys, Descendents, Dead Milkmen) but he listens to everything from techno, jazz, dance, trance, indie... i could go on and on. he listens to just about every genre of music. he's honestly a 40 year old hipster in some aspects.

oh, he was once a big Cure fan and dressed as Robert Smith for Halloween in the 80's

My mom isn't too fussy with what she listens to.
However, Here are some artists she has albums of:

Pixies
Pearl Jam
RATM
Radiohead
Van Halen
Echo and the Bunnymen (their only good album)
Joy Division
Iron Maiden

There are probably more, but I can't remember.

My parents like 80s ballads and pop, which I also like. However they did introduce me to the guitar so I am ever thankful for that.
#27
My dad will listen to anything that isn't too proggy or atmospheric. He loves his classic rock though.

My mom listens to nearly every type of Indian music and anything related to rap.

I kinda overlap with both of them.

My dad listens to mainly classic rock which I'm not too big on. My mom listens to mostly pop, with some folk and some new wave. I overlap a little with her, but not really. I definitely didn't get my taste in music from my parents, but they're open to what I listen to and like a couple of bands I've showed them.
I'm the same as I was when I was six years old
And oh my god I feel so damn old
I don't really feel anything

Because of my dad, I listen to Chicago, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, The Beatles, etc.
Don't care too much for my mom's music. It's typical spanish music that's played at parties. She likes my classical guitar playing though.
If Rock is a life-style, then Metal's an addiction

My mom thought mgmt sounded like Chinese garden music, my dad can't stand floyd, I would never show animal collective to my parents, oddsac....nuff said lol. I think she was just trying to give us more common ground. It's nice to have things to talk about at family gatherings. Other than speculation about my brother's sexuality...

But speculation is the best part. My brother ruined it for us and just came out and told everyone.
