I just could not for the life of me get a tone I liked out of the Mesa 2010 Multi Watt Dual Rectifier. I had it for about 8 months running through a 1960B (not a fan of the V30’s). I honestly spent more time tweaking it than playing. Right when I thought I had it perfect, I would play with my band, turn up the volume and the tone would change to shit. Then there I am again tweaking it for louder volumes. It was ridiculous.
This was the first amp I bought brand new because I thought I would keep it forever, never again will I buy expensive new heads. EVER.
I found a JCM 900 – 4100 Dual Reverb 100watt for $400, and I’ll tell you what, the tone from this absolutely blows the Mesa away. It’s not even funny, MILES BETTER.
A lot of people hate on the JCM 900’s, my guess is they don’t take the time with it. This amp absolutely needs a EQ in the loop, because it has no bottom end. I threw my Boss GE-7 in, left everything untouched except the bottom end and wow. What I love about it is the more you turn it up the better it sounds! The exact opposite of the Mesa.

Sounds a lot like the Blackstar HT series. They sound "decent" without an EQ in the loop, but when you throw one in, they sound great, imo.

And from what I've heard, the HT series and the JCM 900 circuits are "kind of" similar. Makes sense I guess.

I actually had a 6505+ at one point, just not my style. I'd really love a JCM 800 2205 50watt, hard to find though, and probably expensive. Can't beat $400 for the 900!

I take plenty of time with them. I even modded mine and it's still relegated to backup amp. Until you rip out the diodes they are a fizzy mess. I think you need to see an Otolaryngologist.

I'm not a fan of recto's either really, but I'm also not big on 900's.

A "tubescreamer" is a person paid by a guitarist to stand behind the amp and scream at the tubes. This terrifies the tubes into overdriving and delivers a thick, harmonic-rich tone.

If it was the 2010 3 channel Recto they are great amps I played through one when choosing a 7 string. The JCM900 SL-X is a nice amp but the DR is junk. May as well have bought a Blackstar HT-100

Just a totally different sound, which is subjective to the user anyways. Can argue for days about tone. But to call another mans amp Junk, is uncalled for.

I've heard other guys getting good sounds out of Dual Recs but I never could. I've owned the 3 channel version twice thinking maybe if I tweaked it a little more I could actually hear what I was playing. Finally I bought a VHT and now when I turn it up it just keeps sounding better..

+1 to this. I've heard some pretty nice tones out of 3 channels on recordings, but every single one I've owned and played sounded pretty subpar. The 2 channels kick their ass.

The 900s aren't that bad of amps. I can see them working very well for some styles, and I can definitely see where someone would come from having paid 2 grand for a Dual Recto and buying a used 900 for $400 and liking it significantly better. In reality, the tone might not wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better, but when you factor in the cost, the difference is surely amplified.

If price and resale value were equal, I'd definitely take the 900 over a 3 channel Recto. Granted, I haven't tried the 2010 model, but everything before that, definitely.
