Jet City JCA100h, or for more money the JCA100HDM. More gain than you'll ever need plus a great clean channel. Exactly $700.

I would say the Jet City JCA100HDM would be a good choice. It has everything you want, except maybe a tight bottom end. It's not 6505 tight for sure, but I think it's still pretty damn good. Also, it's got a 100w/50w switch, so you could get both of those.

Check out FastRedPonyCar's demos on Youtube if you want good demos of it. If you would need to go new, you could always switch to the regular JCA100H, although that takes away the half power switch and depth mod.

To be clear I said I DON'T use a lot of gain. I'll definitely check this out.
In that case, this amp will work great for you. I usually play with my gain a bit above 4 and in some situations even that's too much.

If you would like to hear a (not so great) mix recording of it listen to my one MP3 on my profile. I recorded all 4 tracks and the lead with one.

I LOVE combo amps, but just couldn't get into the 6505 combos. The amp NEEDS V30s, but V30s suck nuts in combo. Just doesn't work out.

I've been listening to some clips of it on youtube. I like the sound. Yeah I usually have my VK gain on 2 with my OD pushing the amp. Would this be much of an upgrade from the VK though? I could always cut my VK combo into a head I suppose.

If I did get this amp I might opt for the 50 watt version. Let me crank the amp a little more. Don't need all the headroom of the 100 watt version.

Well, the JCA100HDM has a switch to choose between 50 and 100 watts, plus the very useful Depth knob.

I never recommend these, but I'm also going to suggest a Jet City. As I was reading your thread, my exact thought progression was "Mark V", "SLO", "Budget is $700. Jet City".

What have you people been huffing to think that a JCA is articulate? They're all flubby hunks of turd when you turn the gain knob up beyond 12 o'clock. The 20 behaves well enough to work with a screamer, but christ the 100 is bad.

Articulate Gain Channel?
VH100R(used)

Somewhat in support of this suggestion. Nice amps - VERY nice amps - but not the clearest or most defined things on the planet. Great value for money though.

If you want something with good note definition, give some ENGLs a try. If you play the used market well, you could find yourself a Blackmore in your price range, really nice amps.

Don't turn the gain past 5, then. Nobody should even need gain higher than that point. That really goes with any amp in existence. It will only sound muddy and flubby if you make it sound that way.

That sounds pretty articulate to me, that that's what the JCA100h is a direct clone of.

i realize some of these are combos - just thought I'd point it out. If you move around a lot and need to play in 2 places you could always just take the combo. i owned a VK 112 for a bit

You couldn't be any more wrong right now.

No wait, hang on...

You did NOT just compare a Hot Rod to a fucking $2 chinese copy.

Dammit, I worded that wrong.

What I really meant was any amp with the gain too high turns into a muddy flubby mess, not all amps when they're turned past 5. The JCA100h's mud point (from what I've found) is past 5. Every amp has it different.

It's the same amp, just made by abused Chinese children in a sweatshop with cheap-ass components. I'll agree the Hot Rod 100 is far superior but the two are still easily comparable. I've been able to get similar sounds out of both (Hot Rod sounding better, of course).

Do it now!
2nd'd.

Although I was advocating to get the Jet City earlier, I say get this beast instead. For $650 that's a hell of a fucking deal. Plus, it's made in the USA, not in China by abused children.

I would say get that Snott Watt but you are looking to be in a band situation.

Ask Dave about the 30w Snott Watt on baroncustomamps.com . Should be a little less then $900 maybe $900 but it'll be a good bet better than anything else in your budget.

I gig plenty. I want 2 channels because while I don't care if the cleans are great I do want them.

I play punk. My tone is of moderate gain. I have my VK set on 2 with my TS-808 boosting it.

30w tube would be perfect in a band setting, Snott Watt 30w has clean and gain but it's more known for it's high gain channel. It's tight, especially with 6v6 tubes and will have a good amount of low end.
