Hey UG, I keep noticing while watching any guitarist play that when he isn't using his pinky it bends inward while my pinky just straightens outward is their something wrong with my technique? The only guitarist I've seen who has such a pinky is Stephan Forte

I stick my pinky out on higher strings, curl it more on lower strings.
Save a trip to the RT!

Your pinky should stay as close to your other fingers as possible when you are not using it, that way it's closer for when you need it.

My pinky doesn't actually move far when I'm using it but when I'm using the other 3 fingers while knowing i wont be using it my brain just automatically pushes it away. This is exactly what happens to me. Watch his pinky when he plays at about 0:25 a 3 finger lick.

Everytime your brain pushes it away, you need to bring it back. Tell your brain that you need it on standby

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvhZ80OsuTQ <- do this.

Pinky sticking out is bad. Curling in isn't too bad, and very hard to avoid on bends or trills between 1 and 3, but it's still a minor bad habit. If you want to get really nifty you need to work on keeping it relaxed when unused.

What happens to me is the opposite my pinky extends out when trilling between 1 and 3 and bends. It only curls in when i bend upper string downwards.

I don't understand how this is a problem

How am I supposed to use my pinky if it's curled?
