sorry i have a lot of threads going on right now, decent amount of cash flowing, and have extra time on my hands.

how can you you tell if an 6L6 can take KT88's or and EL34 take 6551's and KT77's or KT66's?

i am thinking about throwing a pair of two KT88's in my blue voodoo (6L6GC's 120 watter with two tubes running at half power) and am looking for a little guidance.

also i talked to cathbard quite a while ago about this and he said the transformers would only be able to power two KT88's.

so what is an easy way you could do this.

_______________

i have some experience with amp building, i have completed an 18watt 1974X clone, and am chasing a short in a JTM45 clone, which i havent dug into for a few weeks.

i can also read electrical diagrams/schematics fairly well.

you can't run kt88s in a 6l6 amp.

you might be able to do it in an el34 amp but you need to change the screen resistors and make sure you have enough negative bias voltage.

You need to know:

  • The output transformer primary impedance (for analyzing your load line)
  • The current handling of your power transformer
  • The range of adjustability of your bias circuit and/or how to modify it to work with your chosen tube
  • Plate and screen grid supply voltages for your power tubes

After that you just need to understand how to analyze the power amp given these parameters.

Leave the 6L6's in and get a mod kit from Triode.

http://triodeamplification.com/CRATEBV120KIT.html

Your time would be better spent doing that.

thanks for the link! i appreciate it.

triode happens to be about 45 minutes away from where i live.

i have the full schematics, it will take more for a while but i think i could figure most of this out with a little help.

could i just do a cathode bias at a little warmer relatively to most of peavey's high gainers?

i do not know exactly how to check your fourth asterisk.

pardon the inexperience, i assume you are meaning type of tube when you referred to chosen tubes.
