Fmaj9 is F A C E G

What I want to only play the F A C G, so it eliminates the 7th? Is the cord still considered a Fmaj9?

They got it right, it's an add 9 chord. I've seen songs refer to that as an F 9 before, playing fast and loose with their notation, so they truncate it- usually its with a chord grid showing the real add 9 chord, but they shorten it or truncate it probably for space and clarity, and call it an F 9. I've also seen it notated as an F add2 chord.
