Hey everyone,

Ive been trolling this site for a couple of years now and I figured id finally register!
Im looking to upgrade my gear from a Line 6 Spider III to something a little more...mature, if you will. The spider worked great for me in my hatchling phase as a guitarist, but Ive started playing with people and playing live and this thing just doesnt cut it anymore.
Im looking for a decent head/cab combo for around $500 or so. Ive stumbled across a few local ads, and I found a marshal ATV50H and Behringer BG412H Angle for $450 (ill attach the link at the bottom). Does anyone have any experience using metal tones with this gear?
I play mostly death/trash/prog and have recently taking an almost unhealthy liking of Devin's tones on his Strapping albums (especially Alien, although I dont think that should be too much of a deciding factor for the gear). Does this seem like a good deal? Ive heard some pretty terrible things about the ATV50H though so I just wanted to see what peoples' experience has been with this stuff.
Would it be smarter to just save some cash and grab a VOX AD50 Valvetronix or Marshall MG 100 DFX?

Thanks for you help guys, see you around the threads!

For that price range your better off getting a good combo. I know half stacks are WAYYYY cooler looking but you will be way better off tone wise if you get a good combo. You can always add a cabinet later if you like but my combo has no problems keeping up with my buddy's Marshal half stack. (I prop it up on a stand so the speakers are ear level which really helps alot) - Anyways, if you are open to getting a combo let us know and will make some suggestions.

im a Peavey guy myself so i would have you go try out a Vyper 60

or the 6505 Combo - (used)

Wait for someone else to recomend a Jet City amp as well. I dont have experience with them myself but have heard good things about that brand. Anyways, im sure there will be more suggestions but find a Guitar Center near you and try to get in there to try some different amps out. They will let you pick a guitar off the wall and plug up and amp no problems..

there are loads of options if you look used, browse through craiglist some more and prevent anything starting with marshall ( in your budget ) or any spiders ( exept the valve )

i would also second the motion for a 5150/6505 combo. i was using one for a few years and it kept up with everyone. as for the live playing goes, i've only done two shows in about 5 years worth of gigging (with that band) where i was able to play unmiced. so although the half stack gets you points for looking badass, i think its much better to sound good.

Jet City need an immediate re-tube so add 100$ to any price. And you need a boost and an EQ to do metal with them. Probably better off looking for a used 6505, or something similar.
