Sometimes you get lucky and you find some cool stuff in someone's attic and sometimes you get really lucky and find cool stuff in someone's attic for a really good price.

Got my hands on 2X pre-rola G12M 25 watt greenback speakers today that have been unused for 40 years(they haven't even been installed). Price was really low because the owner had no idea that they'd even work and one was supposed to be damaged. Took my trusty multimeter along and they were working fine and upon closer inspection the one that supposed to had a rip was only a surface scratch and showed no signs on the back. Checked all the numbers and they were indeed from 1971.

Looks like christmass came early this year

1971 is Rola. Plus the Blackbacks are a dead giveaway. I've got a pair myself. Killer speakers.

Aways thought they switched to rola celestion's stickers in the mid 70's. Since the cones numbers are 102 003 it suggest pre-rola

Ya, they switched the labels in '72 IIRC but Rola bought Celestion in '69 or '70. Scumback has a big history written over on TGP if you're curious.

EDIT: It doesn't really make a difference to the speaker, construction didn't change until '74 or so but pre-Rola is a really specific tone that has more collector value than anything.

Seems like it's a bit late for the party then. Was a bit confused since the sticker, chassis number and cone numbers all added up to pre-rola, but looks like they were build in the in between years. Still, for 90 euro I bought myself some nice speakers. Still waiting for my custom jtm45(I'll make a thread on it once it's done) to be delivered next week so I can test out the speakers. Since they haven't been used I'll prob be breaking in a pair of 40 year old speakers

those definitely look like black backs.

good speakers still though.

I would definitely not use just 2 of those for a jtm 45.

Here's a pic of one of the speakers I got for the guy.

Why black backs? Looks like I've got myself a bit of an oddity here.

The JTM45 isn't going to be your run of the mill JTM45 but I'll explain that later

aw there we go colors all good.

well at any rate. 50 watts into 2 25watt speakers is asking for trouble.

The amp is rated at 38 watts though it will be tricky since I have to wire them in parallel

I smoked a pair of greenbacks with a JTM45 a few years ago so I play it safe with a 4x12 of greenies now and use an attenuator if I use a 2x12 (not that I don't already use an attenuator anyway).

Will do once it's ready. Already tested the amp a couple of times but my tech needed it to build the headshell . It should be done next week
