Hey Pit,
What are your favorite lyrics from songs combined with the way they're delivered (via way it's sung, effects, etc.)?
I personally really enjoy the first line (thread title) from Pumped Up Kicks and the way the upbeat mood of the song gets overshadowed by the lyrics and effects used on the voice!
So Pit, let me know what you guys think!

The whole damn song in my opinion.

But when he says,"why can't we just admit it" betwixt the turbulent ethereal drumming, the metallic grind of the almost-sentient guitar fuzz and the pretty cool bass playing...

...feels good man.

If I could break down these walls
and shout my name at heavens gate.
I'd take these hands
And I'd destroy the dark machineries of fate
Cathedrals are broken
Heaven is no longer above
And hellfire's a promise away
I'd still be saying
I'm still in love.

It's the break in Stings "When We Dance"

I just love that part, how it comes in after the slow song before hand is beautifully emotional.

The chorus to Pardon Me is awesome. Good lyrics and a heartfelt melody.

The Crystal Ship by The Doors.

Epitaph - King Crimson
The wall on which the prophets wrote is cracking at the seams.
Upon the instruments of death the sunlight brightly gleams.
When every man is torn apart with nightmares and with dreams,
Will no one lay the laurel wreath when silence drowns the screams.

Between the iron gates of fate the seeds of time were sown,
And watered by the deeds of those who know and who are known.
Knowledge is a deadly friend if no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see is in the hands of fools.

Confusion will be my epitaph as I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back and laugh.
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying,
Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying.
Obvious answer...

Also, since everyone is listing Tool, "Jesus, won't you F**king whistle?" sometimes makes me giggle for some reason.

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want
He makes me down to die
Through pastures green He leadeth me the silent waters by.
With bright knives He releaseth my soul.
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places.
He converteth me to lamb cutlets,
For lo, He hath great power, and great hunger.
When cometh the day we lowly ones,
Through quiet reflection, and great dedication
Master the art of Karate,
Lo, we shall rise up,
And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water.

EDIT: but on a more serious note, pretty much the entire song of "Bastard" from good ol' Devy.

"Nighttime, turn around
Lonely is the city tonight
Nighttime, all around
Lonely in the city tonight"

For the sole reason that I listened to it non-stop when I was lonely in a big city

Paying attention to Gone Away by The Offspring always gives me chills when I listen to the song. Sorry, but vague, esoteric, "poetic" lines from indie bands don't really effect me too much though I may like them.

The 'one two three four five six seven' bit ruins it slightly for me.

I was actually thinking of this one too. Soooo good.

I also like the "bitch imma monster" at the beginning. Just fun to say.

God, that entire song is just filled with awesome delivery.

Butting through the overhanging trees

The waters going down it's a mighty tight squeeze.

Bruce Dickinson - Road to Hell

"Father forgive me my sins
Give me the nails, I'll hammer them in"

Jonathan Coulton - Skullcrusher Mountain

"I made this half-pony half-monkey monster to please you
But I get the feeling that you don't like it
What's with all the screaming?
You like monkeys, you like ponies
Maybe you don't like monsters so much
Maybe I used too many monkeys
Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you?"

John Tams - Spanish Bride

"And we sailed out of England bound for Lisbon harbour
With bayonets a-gleaming and pride to the fore
We'd little to hope but we tried hard to cherish
The thoughts of our loved ones on England's fair shore"

Blind Guardian - Time Stands Still (At the Iron Hill)

"Slowly in fear
The dark lord appears
Welcome to my lands
You shall be damned"

Blind Guardian - Mordred's Song

"See hate will rise,
So don't come closer,
Fear your child.
Born with a king's heart,
But fate fooled me,
And changed my cards."

Blind Guardian - Punishment Divine

"Out of the mist it's coming closer now
It never rains, it pours on me"

I could go on listing BG lyrics all day, so I suppose I ought to stop there.
