Budget is between £200-400. I intend to record electric guitar, vocals, Midi keyboard and maybe something percussive. It is for home use, volume might be an issue.

Go with the Focusrite Saffire 6 (or a Saffire Pro 24 if you have the money and don't mind FireWire, it will give you more options as far as routing and expanding goes) over the Scarlett 8i6, at least here in the states, it's cheaper and it's better. The MOTU interface is actually a really good one, but Mark of the Unicorn is notorious for having horrible driver support and I'd be wary of buying one of their interfaces if I were you.

I'd go with the Focusrite I mentioned. Great mic preamps and great conversion for the price.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

maybe you're not saying the right things? an amp likes to know you care.

^Then get the Saffire 6.

You should be able to add a FireWire card to your existing computer for fairly cheap though, assuming you have an open PCI slot on your desktop, or if you're using a laptop, you have an open mini card slot.
