How do you play Amajor? I have recently been informed the first 'A' chord is apparently not a normal A but infact it is an Asus2!

I've always played Amajor as this shape and shall continue to do so. I am curious to see if anyone else here does this too.

I play it with the third like any sane person.

This is my favourite A;

e 0
b 3
g 0
d 2
a 0
e

I think it's an Asus4 or something or other suspended. Best played right before playing A maj.

I play A major with the 5th fret bar. Open chords are for rock 'n' roll simpletons.

^It's an Asus2.

A = A C# E
Asus2 = A B E

They are different. They sound different. Try playing in A Phrygian Dominant with this nonsense and see how stupid you sound.

A7sus4.

I play my A's with an A, a C# and an E in whatever order is appropriate for the moment.

Like a normal person.

What is it?

Asus2. Though technically that's an inaccurate name. Suspensions are created by resolving a chord around a note and then moving the note to it's correct place in the new chord. If you just strum that chord, it really isn't a suspension.

The low E and A can tend to sound muddled when both ringing out together though. Only one other person plays A the big way

Oh yeah. Peter Buck got three records worth of songs outta that trick.

Wouldn't that be "E major/C# minor" or "Fb major/Db minor"?

I don't know specifics about theory like that

Just curious, why wouldn't you describe it as E major/Db minor?

Thought so hahaha.

^Because E Major has a D sharp in it, so it can't have a D flat. So, to make it D flat minor, the E and F have to be flat, making it F flat major.

The relative minor is also the aeolian mode of the key, or the 6th. The 6th of any E is going to be some sort of C, not D. Having a D would imply it's a 7th. Same reason we get double sharps and flats in some keys.

Edit: Also what TBF said. In Western music we don't repeat diatonic notes within a key.

It doesn't resolve to A, though

EDIT: Yes it does The second time.

I dunno, I've always thought sus2 chords sounded weirdly melancholy. Reflective. Sad, almost. Maybe it's just because that's how they're used in the music I listen to. I grew up on The Police and Andy Summers uses those chords in pretty much every single song of theirs usually with this kinda shape:

x
x
9
7
5
x

So that's probably a reason why I tend to use suspended chords a lot as well

They can be, but then again loads of really sad songs are also in Cmajor

Dropped A is better.

Generously add some seventh chords and you're good to go.

Maybe if you're into jazz.

This is also correct, also a viable alternative is

G0
D0
A0
E0
