I need a pa for vocals that will be loud enough to play small shows with and not get overpowered by the instruments for a metal band with double bass drums, 2 guitars, and a bass. What would you recommend?

A mixer/power amp combo and two speakers. The poweramp should be at least 150w. Thats the set up I am running. Does practice well and small venues adequately.

Depends on the TS's budget.

What is the budget? For vocals, there are a number of great powered speakers that take the guesswork out of the PA. You don't have to worry about phase, ohms, and different speaker gauge line. You just plug and play, and XLR lines are CHEAP and you can run them anywhere. The upside is that you can use the powered speakers as monitors when you get to a bigger venue.
