I wanted a new soldering iron for Christmas to work on wiring with my guitars. Well, my mother bought me one. Except it wasn't a soldering iron. It's a 200 watt soldering gun. And I'm almost certain I can't get this thing anywhere near my guitar's electronics. Is there any way I can use this thing for wiring? I know there's probably not, but I'm being optimistic here asking. SO... Yeah.

Oh it'll definitely work lol, those are designed to solder up car radiators and heavy electrical stuff. I wouldn't want to use one for simple guitar wiring

That's what I'm afraid of, it'll damage the electronics if I try to use it. I know it'll work, just not quite for the purpose i want it to... Sheesh, I just wanted something to change out my pickups... haha

I got a 120watt gun... it's OK, it doesn't damage anything. It's quite awkward to work with in tight spaces though, a pencil soldering iron would work much better.

i use a soldering gun to wire my guitars, just dont hold it on the pots or anything for too long since they get a lot hotter, a lot faster.

just try to excahnge it for a 30 watt pencil style one.
Just call me Julius, J, etc.
Taking an Internet break for a while, will come on when I can.

Well, problem is she bought it online. So I don't really know where or how to exchange it.

yeah, pots burn fairly quickly so thatll be a no go, does it have a variabele temperature?

It may work if you're really quick with it. I had to use a soldering gun before (emergency) and as long as you're not on it too long you should be ok.

It'll work just fine. I've never in my life burnt a pot. I prefer a hotter iron/gun over a cooler one, I've ****ed more stuff up with cooler irons holding them on there forever trying to get the damn solder to stick then with a nice hot one. Although 200 watts is fairly hefty. Just get in and get out quick and you'll be fine. But like others have said, pencil type soldering irons are muuuuch nicer to use.

not unless your God and are perfect with soldering irons.

return it and order a xytronic soldering station 75 watt is what i would use max. you CAN use higher, but the higher the voltage, the higher the risk of over heating.

Okay. Thanks for clearing that up. I wonder what things I actually can use the thing for... haha

Only solder experience I've had is with guitar wiring, back before my iron broke.
