About a month I accidentally cut the side of my left index finger around the first bend with a knife, quite deep. I just strapped it up and went to bed, but the next morning I realised I could barely feel anything in that side of my finger above the cut, or the tip, so I went to the hospital with it.

I was checked over by a nurse who sent me for x-rays etc to make sure the bone was okay, but everything was fine, other than the nerve, which she deemed was just damaged and would repair by itself over time. I had it in a bandage for a couple of weeks, and then went back for a check-up on it. The flesh wound had pretty much healed, bar a big scab, but the sensation was still almost non-existent.

A hand specialist took a look at it, and after 5 minutes determined that I'd not just damaged the nerve, I'd severed it, and so I had to go on for surgery two days later to have the whole thing reopened and the nerve reattached. The surgeon said that some of my feeling would return over time, but that the majority would probably be lost. This was about 10 days ago.

Anyway, it's all still in a bandage but I went to have the dressing changed the other day and it was still pretty nasty looking, but it doesn't go anyway near the tip of my finger. However, whenever I try and play bass (or guitar) with it, I just can't. I get lots of uncomfortable tingling feelings and some mild pain as soon as I even touch a string with that finger... the whole thing is extremely uncomfortable.

The whole thing is starting to drag now, I'm itching to get playing again, and my band's already had to cancel 5 gigs. I'm worried that I might not recover to a point where I can play properly again. Does anybody have any experience with severed/damaged nerves and playing stringed instruments that might help me to gauge where I stand with this whole thing?

TLDR - Have you ever severed/damaged a nerve? How well did it recover? How long did it affect your guitar playing?

Something similar happened to me, had my middle finger shut in a fence and the nail came off, also severed a nerve and I haven't had any feeling since, this was last May. I can still play fine though, the pain subsides after a while and eventually the tingling gets better. Of course this is just my experience, yours might be something else entirely.

Good luck to you, hope your finger gets better.

I got a bit of pain if I played with my right hand so I had to convert to a lefty. It really ruins your rhythm. Playing with yourself just isn't as fun, I had to find a girlfriend.

I damaged the nerve in my arm about 4 months ago. I can move it freely now but it gets painful from time to time. The doctor said that nerves heal at a very very slow pace so it may take months or years for a full recovery, but I can play guitar normally now.

Yep, few years back I cut my left wrist through glass (accident).
Cut through some nerve and a lot more. Some of the nerve didn't fully recover, like the top of my thumb and some parts of my index, but I still play and pluck (I'm a lefty).

Yeah but not so much. I cut my hand a while back.

Wow that sucks ass. Most damage I'd done to my fingers is car doors slamming on my hands. (not as bad as it sounds, still pretty bad though)

Good luck with your recovery.
Hugging Thread; I'm here to help

Didn't Dave Mustaine have something like that?

IIRC he had a compressed nerve which i assume is less debilitating than a severed nerve.

Odd, I posted a thread about this not too long ago.

Anyway, yeah. Few days ago I'm playing guitar and suddenly nerve damage out of ****ing no where. I got prescribed pain killers and nerve relaxants (or whatever you call them in English).

First my middle finger just really hurt whenever I touched anything with the tip, then my hand started shaking (more than usual, anyway) and after that it got a weird tingling feeling. Boiled up some water, put it in a pot and shoved my hand right in there (there was cold water in there, I'm not retarded). Wouldn't go away, so I went to a doctor and voila! Lots of medicine, no alcohol allowed anymore and no guitar for a long time.

Ya I cut myself at my old job pretty deep with a serrated knife, right on the tip of my finger, went real deep, almost to the bone and it hurt like a mother****er. For a few months it would hurt when I would press down on strings to play guitar, it went away after a while though. I was told to gently massage the area somehow to stimulate more growth and overall cell activity. More than likely though it just healed on its own, I think it just reduced the appearance of the scar.

Same thing happened to me with a nail once. I was kid, dropped a trumpet on my finger nail, instant blood swelling under the nail, fell off afterwards, then grew back

My dad shut a car door on his finger once, apparently his nail was hanging like in the door had to get surgery and everything. He also dropped a brick on his finger nail, two days later when the blood swelling under the nail was too painful, he took a drill and a tiny drill bit and punched a whole through it to relieve the pressure. Ya we're just crazy like that, home surgery and all.... lol
