Simple enough question: Do you prefer serial or non-serial tv shows?

A serial show is one with story arcs that unfold across episodes and seasons.

Serial
Pros: Longer stories, character development, back-stories and character insight.
.
Cons: Harder to get into, missing episodes can derail you from the plot, unresolved plots/subplots can drive you to insanity.

Examples of serial shows: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Dragonball-Z.

Examples of non-serial shows: CSI, Ed Edd and Eddy.

On the come up we were listening to Grateful Dead and the music started passing through my bowel and out my arsehole as this violet stream of light. I shat music. It was beautiful.

I enjoy watching non-serial shows, especially since they're almost always funny (almost, not always), but I like a few serial shows, mainly Bleach, and a few other anime shows.

serial.

i like epic endings to long struggles.

you can't have goku killing frieza in 1 episode... unless you watch kai.
#9
I voted for the last one because of the horrible sentence.

But I prefer serial. It has alot of room for suspense, which can really make or break a show.
#11
Goku sure came a long way from being an idiot kid..

....to being an idiot kid

You can mess up the plot if you miss one episode of DBZ?

The entire episode is just going to be guys yelling at each other
#15
I watch shows that require a lot of thinking

R.I.P Jon Lord, Rory Gallagher and Jimi!
#16
I watch more non-serial shows than serial shows though my favorites are serial shows.

Yea, this one time I stopped watching Dragonball Z for an entire year, this was at about the time Goku set out for King Kai's house...

One year later, I switch on DBZ..... he's about half-way there.

those were weird examples... I like both, but for "serial" I like The Walking Dead and Hell On Wheels

No preference: You can get great plots and deep connection to characters through good serial shows.

Episodic shows can bring you a different perfectly constructed microcosm each week. They're great for experimentation and individual episodes can be so well-made that they make the whole series worth while.
#21
Take Doctor Who for example. It's largely an episodic series (after the revival; it was a bunch of mostly self-contained four- to twelve-episode serials before that), although it's becoming less of one now that Moffat is head writer, but it has a definite story arc every series.

A lot of shows have both serial and non-serial elements (most episodic series tend to these days), but I voted serial.

Do adults actually watch dragonball Z?

Terrible examples of serial shows, could have used Dexter, Breaking Bad, Prison Break? Shows that if you do miss an episode you would be completely lost?

I'm always too busy with something else to sit down at a certain time every week or so and watch tv
#32
Series but only once they have finished so I can get them all at once and not have to wait a week for each episode.
End of series cliff hangers make me rage
#34
I guess serial. Mad Men is my favorite show. Other than that I mainly just watch comedy TV. Although Curb Your Enthusiasm is an example of a comedy show that is serial.
#35
I have drifted away from watching television, but I prefer serial.
In my heart I'm with you

I wanted to come up with a cereal show joke but I couldn't.

For comedic purposes i'm fine with either, but non-serial works well and is more common. But I love my episode by episode drama. If I want to laugh i'm choosing non-serial; if I want serious then i'm choosing serial.

Serial are much more fulfilling. It's easier to care about the characters and what happens to them when you know that whatever happens will impact them throughout the rest of the series.
