So basically, im after a suggestion for a 50w head. I usually prefer british voicings (though i'm not that fussy), and need a good overdriven and clean tone. I play anything from rock to metal (Mastodon, Pearl Jam, Lamb of God, Tool) and need something with enough grit to handle those sounds.

I'm not one of those players who likes to play with alot of gain (I keep the gain on my DSL at 5 with a TS9 as a boost.)

thanks dudes

Yeah what are you hoping to get out of a new head? Something that compliments your DSL, or something to replace it, or what? I hope you're not getting rid of your DSL, I've got the exact same head and I love it

EDIT: looking at your sig though, I'd go for a new cab before I went for a new head. Just sayin'.

Kosmic in Osborne Park have a Night Train NT50 in right now. It will do what you want very nicely. If I recall it was about $900 in the shop. They didn't have the matching cab but you seem sorted for that. We Perthians are a rare breed on these forums I've noticed.

IMO there isn't enough of a difference to dictate the choice from 50 watts v. 100 watts, there will be a small headroom difference, but you would probably not looking for power tube distortion anyway. however i certainly wouldn't go much under 50 watts.

I was going to recommend a DSL, then I saw you have a DSL.

So, what doesn't your DSL give you that you want?

Why 50W specifically? You're limiting yourself for no reason.

Have a look for a Marshall 6100 (30th Anni). Three channels with multiple voicings, switchable 100W/50W//25W, ridiculous levels of gain and hearty rock tones. One of the best amps I've ever owned.
#10
you still haven't said what's wrong with your DSL.

lower wattage isn't always the answer if that's it. i had an 18 watt amp that was tougher to dial in than a 50 watt head i currently own.

Good seeing another one around man!

And i'm unsatisfied with the top end harshness of my DSL, i cant seem to get rid of it.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far, everyone

I think alot of that is probably coming from the crappy Ashton Cab.

Before you sink $1200 into a different amp try the DSL through a better cab. see if that does get it sounding more like what you want.

Then you can spend some of that on getting a really nice 4x12

He's in Australia, man. Some of those amps will cost as much as a house.

A DSL50/100 is probably your best bet in Australia, spend you money on a decent cab. You won't get LoG out of it though even through an oversized Orange cab.. You can always run something like a Barber Dirty Bomb to get you up there though. For that you really want a Mesa but they are crazy prices here.
A Peavey Ultra/XXX/JSX would be nice but good luck trying to find one.

You may want to consider a Vyper Tube 60. They go for under $800 new in Australia.

The speakers he's got in the cab aren't too bad though, and the Ashton cabs are a knock off of Randall ones IIRC.

Yeah but the last ashton cab I had a look at looked like it was made out of Cardboard instead of ply.

but as I said, its worth trying a different cab before he sinks the dosh into a new amp.

Oh of course, it'd be stupid not to.

My NT50 suggestion still stands, since you can roll off a lot of the highs with the Tone Cut. Have you tried different tubes in the DSL? They might not be helping if you've got stock tubes

I have JJ/Tungsol tubes installed. And theres actually a Peavey XXX head and cab at a store nearby me for $1000

Getting rid of your head without trying it through a good cab is ludicrous.

It's simple - go to a rehearsal studio (with your band ideally, but on your own is fine) and hire one of their decent cabs.
Over here it costs maybe £1-4 on top of the room hire, which is usually about £15 for a 4 hours or so. Handy if you haven't got mates with good amps, and you can crank to your heart's content.

Seriously though I think this happens to much, myself included when people give you advice repeatedly and it's ignored. Just get a new cab man.

A "tubescreamer" is a person paid by a guitarist to stand behind the amp and scream at the tubes. This terrifies the tubes into overdriving and delivers a thick, harmonic-rich tone.
#26
You could also try an ENGL Screamer or a Thunder 50 watt head, I used to have the Screamer combo like 2 years ago, and it definitely had more than enough gain for your needs, plus it did have a much more modern sound compared to the JCM2000's.

No idea about the prices of them second hand over there though, the mint condition ones are usually rip-offs.
