Me:

I lumped Modest Mouse into that "Generic Indie Band" category before listening to them. Holy shit, I was dead wrong, listened to a few of their albums today and fell in love.

What about you guys?

I thought Machine Head would be generic Metallica style thrash.

Coldplay and Black Veil Brides are probably the biggest. I seriously didn't listen to either pf them almost purely because everyone else said they were shit, man I was so ignorant

Black Veil Brides I don't really listen to all that much, but I mean they're not the pile of shit everyone makes them out to be. I dig Perfect Weapon.

Taylor Swift (Mainstream, but she grew on me amazingly quick)
Foo Fighters ( I initially called them too generic, but holy shit was I wrong)
Guns N' Roses ( Axl is really an acquired taste)
Oasis (I hate most Britpop)
A.F.I (Thought they were a crappy mainstream emo band)
Rush (Didn't like Geddy's voice, I like it now)
Def Leppard ( Ignorant against a one armed drummer, I just feel plain bad about that)
Megadeth (The voice grows on you)
Rage Against The Machine (Initially hated the rapping, got over it)
Scorpions (Thought they were a crappy German Techno-Pop group. Thought wrong)
Soundgarden (Sounded generic and boring, went to Nirvana for grunge)
ZZ Top ( Thought it was a rapper)

First 3 albums are better than their new pop-rock sound they went for with whatever the 4th album was called.

So much this. I was all like, "Claudio sounds like a castrato, and the fans are fucking weird." Then my roommate told me to check out the Neverender DVD, and I became a total fanboy.

The Faceless

I still can't stand them. I think my first impression of them was ruined because I saw them open for BTBAM and In Flames. The Faceless played like absolute shit that night, which has ruined any chance of me enjoying their albums.

Megadeth, always thought the vocals were a joke and I'd never take them seriously. Now they're one of my favorites.

Protest The Hero, too. I was always all 'modern metal is gay, thrash4liefbro!' but suck my noodle and call me Jennifer, I was wrong.

The entirety of rap
All of classical music
Rock was nothing to me
I couldn't bear prog
Hardcore and punk music I pretended didn't exist

Basically, everything I listen to now, I used to hate. Except for a few shining examples.

Coheed & Cambria are one that I think not many people immediately like. I only liked Welcome Home for the longest time because I listened to it their other stuff and didn't like how weirdly major-key it was. But now they're basically my favorite band, so...
Another was Alice In Chains. I kept hearing about them and getting told to listen to Rooster or whichever and I just thought it was boring. Again though, one of my favorite bands.
I think the bands you like the most for the longest time are the ones you don't immediately love.
