So I'm getting a new amp (you may have seen my other thread about it), and I like the look of the Jet City JCA2112RC and the Vox VT80+ (both similarly priced). Has anyone got either, and if so, what do you think of it? Obviously, I'm going to have to try them before buying, but how well do these amps perform (tone-wise) at low volumes?

Of course, these amps are different in terms of what they do: one's an all tube driven amp, and one's a modelling valvestate amp, but they're both up for consideration for me.

Thanks!
Henry

I've used both VT's and the JC and I have to say the JC was a much better sounding amp. That being said, I much prefer the higher wattage JCA's, since I don't like the sound of EL84s much.

Thanks, guys! Having never bought a tube amp before, I'm not 100% sure on this, but I assume the EL84's can be changed to better sounding tubes? Are different amps only 'compatible' with certain tubes, or are they universal?
#5
nope the only tubes you can run are el84. eurotubes have had a low power el84 made called the el844, but some amps can not handle them for reasons I do not know.

Hmm, okay - thanks

Has anyone tried the Jet City JCA5212RC? If it was your money, would you choose it over the JCA2112RC?
#7
I would - but it's not my decision to make. Go try both. EL84s are quite different tonally from 6L6's. Neither is better, but my personal preference is the 6L6.

How giggable would the 50 watt be as oppose to the 20 watt?

Depends what sorta tones you're going for: cleaner, go for 50, grittier, more power tube distortion, go for 20.

As I play mostly classic rock, I'd need the distortion - but I have an OCD pedal and an Ibanez Tube Screamer. Would these do the job for classic rock tones?

Yep, both can do Guns level distortion, no problem. They don't even need a boost.

i had a few JCA2112RC's (lol, two defectives), the third i had for a month. i was really disappointed in it. that is rare for me, because i like to have a lot of amps around, but it didn't keep me entertained. i wasn't expecting brootz, which it DOES NOT GIVE, even when boosted with an od.

i am sure modded and with new tubes it could sound great, as i have heard a few of those clips, but keep in mind some people do post processing. that is not a fair representation.

never owned anything made by Vox.

The lower watt JCAs aren't supposed to be "brootz" amps - they're supposed to be rock amps (although, they do get pretty gainy).

TS: Can we get an idea of what kind of tone you're aiming for here?

i dont know if you were referring to something else, unless you didn't read what was in my post all that well. i continued to let people that it doesn't get brootz. and even added w/OD.

I'm looking for a classic rock style tone. Led Zeppelin would probably be the heaviest it gets - I'm not into metal, really.

Maybe you got three lemons? CatharsisStudio got great metal tones out of his JCA20H.

i remember that demo. it was awesome. seemed like a decent amount of processing though, IIRC. that was actually why i bought one lol.

the two defectives, plug in, no turn on. no light, nothing. checked tubes swapped tubes, nothing. sent it back. got another one, plugged it in, turned it on and pop, it died as well. maybe the third time is a charm... lol. at least it was fully functioning it didn't sound good to me. especially because i have and had quite a few of other amps sitting around, and it couldn't do anything better than anything else i had.

I mean it's not the best amp ever for everything.

But it's cheap and does somethings well.

although the one I bought from mclaw sounded way better then any of the ones I played at guitar center.

at the time i had a tweaker and a dual terror. i didn't really need it. and i wanted another Orange cab.

however i still didn't think it was anything great. it got way over-hyped.

The lower watt Jet Cities are not good for any metal beyond Judas Priest, even with an OD pedal. I don't care what people want to tell me.

The higher wattage ones, however (excluding the 5212rc), have the strength to rip your nuts off and force feed them to you as the rest of your limbs are slowly torn off and your body is turned inside out and your organs are fed to demon soldiers in Satan's army, all while you are playing it. Without a boost.

That said, TS: Since you stated that you are only playing classic rock, the 2112rc should do great for you. The Vox would be more versatile, but isn't all-tube so it wouldn't sound as awesome.
