When I play bass through this cheapie guitar amp, it works for a little while if I keep the volume way down, but dies (sound gets distorted - in a bad way) if I turn it up at all. If I let it rest a day, it seems OK again. I've only done it twice so far, as I assume it will cause (or may have already caused) real damage. So what part is failing? Is the just the speaker? Can I replace the speaker with something that has a nice big magnet? Is there some reason a guitar amp will not work with bass sounds? Yeah, I should just buy a bass amp, but I dont feel like it yet.

how big is the speaker on the amp in terms of diameter?

And yh the speaker is the reason for the breakup - it cannot handle those bass frequencies properly

Depends, I don't know what pickups go good with plywood. EMGs will make it sound like every other EMG guitar though.
