Hi. I am new to playing guitar. I really want to start. I recently am getting lessons from my uncle who is amazing at guitar bass and drums. I would like to get a guitar for my birthday coming up this month. I was looking at the epiphone les Paul Jr. And the fender starcaster strat pack. I really like to play rockand roll. Especially 80s music. I don't want to have to do a ton of upkeep. But I am willing. My Max is $250 for all the stuff I need. Please help.

Oh shit we got our first 12'er to make a thread in EG! I'd suggest you get one o' them value packs that include an amp and all that shizz.

Yeah I'm going too.
what is better for 80s rock and for a beginner. And what is more versatile. Meaning I can play different types of music.

The special 2 is utter garbage from what I've heard. Give me a sec and I'll find you something.

Edit: Just get the squier, then when you get some money you can get something a little more decent.

Edit 2: Here you go, LTD has really good low range guitars. This one will be versatile as shit, just find a cheap amp to go with it 'till you can afford something decent.

Yeah, just get the squier pack. You can eventually upgrade your amp and guitar later on. (If you're still interested)

I know this may not be what you want, but if you can go used and tell us where you live we can find you better gear. 100$ guitars are pretty horrible. I sold my starter guitar 3 weeks in.

Avoid value packs. Nothing good ever comes from them. If you want a les paul style I suggest a Agile 2000 or a Xavier. If you can wait for an amp I would suggest a Roland Cube 15 or a Peavey Vypyr 15 they are both $100 but they are worlds ahead of any amp you can get in a starter pack. I would also have to argue that even a Douglas or SX LP would be better than a LP Junior and there only between $100 to $150.

www.rondomusic.com *best budget guitar shop on the web*
www.guitarfetish.com *perfectly complements rondo with its cheap pickups and hardware, also they have guitars with really good specs for the price*

I agree with DarkDevil. The starter packs are crap. I do however think a guitar with a stop bar rather than a vibrato is the way to go for a beginner. Easier to stay in tune and change strings. If you like the LP style then I would go for a les paul copy, either epiphone or agile, etc. Get one with two humbuckers unlike the jr.

Slash is my idol. Love les Paul's. My Max is $200. I'm iffy because if I don't like it $200 down the drain. Can someone help me find a close look a like to Slashes les Paul. I would also like it to have that nob at the top of the loop part on the guitar. I'm not very smart on guitar parts. I can live without an amp for a bit.

You won't get a guitar that looks like slash's LP for $200 (or maybe you will but it won't be that good anyway.) Look around for something used. Your uncle can try it out and decide if it's good.

FYI, slash uses a tobacco burst lp. If you go used you should be able to snag a half-decent guitar in that color but playability always comes first.

What is special about p90s. So many good reviews on that les Paul. I am going to get it. What can I get for $80. Maybe an amp. Even if it is crappy. I just need to start out. Needs to be on guitar center. Thanks.

To make it simple, p90s are in between a humbucker and a single coil. But they hum like single coils. Let's just say it's a bit thicker and "stronger" if you will compared to a single coil but not to the extent of a humbucker.

You won't get much for $80. And I know what you want right now isn't much but save up. It'll be discouraging and harder than it should be when playing on a cheap guitar. Even $200 for a guitar should get you something very nice (in terms of fretwork, playability, construction).
Put simply, you get what you pay for.

Ignore epiphone in your price range entirely. With your budget you cant really get a decent epiphone unless you find a really good deal on craigslist but here are some in your price range that will be good. All of them have mahogany bodies and set necks like a real les paul should be.

Just the colors. They both have MOP inlays even though one does not say it does. For a good beginner guitar those are not bad. But it has all the looks of a LP without the benefits of a real LP.

Typical Les Paul:
Mahogany Body
Mahogany Neck
Set In Neck

SX Callisto:
Alder Body
Maple Neck
Bolt on Neck

Its still a solid guitar though I think the Douglas Shadow's are a little better quality wise even though they are exactly the same.

If you spend a little more this one is a lot better. Better wood, set neck, and much better pickups. http://www.rondomusic.com/DEIMOSTWR.HTML

The pickups are not as good as the Deimos in this one but it has a mahogany neck instead of a maple neck.
http://www.rondomusic.com/callistocusbk.html

Which ever you get you will want to change the strings, the stock strings are pretty crappy. roughly $4 for a new set at your local best buy.

Even check some used stores by you they can be of a great help to you as well. There might be a lot of pawn shops and some used stores by you. You can usually get a good deal on everything, for 275 I got an excellent Schecter Gryphon, a decent practice amp and a hard case. They might even cut you a deal for buying a large amount of stuff.

Sp what is better:
sx callisto cs
Sx deimos
Or epiphone les Paul special II

SX Deimos is easily the best of those 3.

My uncle has a les Paul II. It is ok. Is there an epiphone les paul for under $200 that has the nob at the top. Of the guitars body. I don't know what it is called

Guitar Center Used repository. I've bought my two Peavey Vypyr's for half price and they worked 100%. it's a safer place to try out the used guitar models in your price range in store than craigslist if ya can get them shipped.

So what I am hearing on this forum is that every guitar is shit. Geez. I mean I'm a beginner. Just want a slash look a like les Paul. Doesn't have to be Gibson. Under $200. Then I can go get an amp pack. Is there an epiphone one that looks like it.

Yep, but it's not in your price range. Hate to break it to you, man, but guitar isn't a cheap hobby. SX/Douglas/Agile/Xaviere are your best bets.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.
