Okay, so my laptops speakers conked out. Just won't work. Also, I thought listening to stuff on my iPod from an external speaker/dock >>> earphones. So yeah, should I get an external speaker for the laptop or a dock for the iPod?

I really don't know much about all this, so excuse me.

If you want to fill yhe room, B&W Zeppelin Air. You can stream from the iThing or iTunes over your network.

If you just want music as you work, B&W MM1 nearfield speakers or Epoz Aktimate Micros (both are asynchronous USB, so bypass the laptop's soundcard.)

You can use external speakers with anything that has a headphone output. Get some decent speakers.
I shall grant you three wishes.

None of which will work.

Does the above post enrage, offend or confuse you?

Good.

Speakers are probably cheaper, and can be used with anything that has a headphone jack, including your laptop and Ipod.

Yup. So much more uses out of speakers.
