I have been writing a lot of songs ever since I was 8 but most of the songs I write end up being all dark and depressing, does anyone have any tips on how to make a "happier" song? haha I've tried a lot but the songs I make when I try too hard to make them happy they end up being all rainbows and butterflies and we all know how that sounds when your trying to make serious music.... So, any suggestions on how to make them a little more light hearted and happy?

No problem with writing dark stuff if that's how you're feeling. May as well be honest with yourself and your work. It'll probably come out better that way. Just listen to Devin Townsend's Devin Townsend Project. The entire thing is based around how he is honestly feeling.

upbeat, major chords + catchy melody.

i used to have the exact opposite problem, all my songs turned out happy and stuff. i think it also depends on what you listen to. check some happy bands. and read the rules too, this should go under S&L techniques, i'll move it there for you this time.
