Has anybody gotten this game (for PC, if it matters. I'm not sure if it came out on anything else)? I got it today, sat forever while it installed, was about to dive into the glorious universe of Star Wars, then BAM. I apparently can only play if I pay a monthy subscription. This is ****ed. Nowhere have I seen that I need to pay to play this thing. Is there anyway around this retardedness? Incredibly annoyed right now.

REALLY LATE EDIT: I've decided that I will pay for it as everyone seems to say it's amazing.

So, no, there is no way around the 'retardedness'.

The game is brilliant, I moved over from WoW and I am very impressed.

Level 33 Commando at the moment, the flashpoints (dungeons) are great and I am really looking forward to the ops (raids).

Also, unusually for an MMO, the story is fantastic. I can't speak for every class but the story for the Republic Trooper I am doing is amazing. And I've only just started Chapter 2, after about 80 hours of gameplay.

I'm a huge SW fan, and I love WoW-style MMORPG's. Is this game really worth $60 at the store and then $15/month after that, though?

The game looks really good, I used to play SWG, so I really wanna play this Star Wars MMO too. But since you already have it, you might as well pay monthly, its worth the money.

Yeah, that's my thing about MMORPGs, too. They're tons of fun, but you have to bank in tens of hours a week to make the $15/month worth it.

It's just like playing any other game... I played WoW a fair bit but I didn't play it half as much as some people play CoD.

And the money issue... When I played WoW I spent £8.99 (the monthly subscription) a month on games.

Then I stopped WoW in September.

I started playing SW:TOR two weeks ago.

In the period between WoW and SW:TOR I bought Dragon Age, the expansion pack, and Skyrim. I spent around £60 on games in just under 3 months.

When playing an MMO you don't tend to buy other games, and for the amount of time spent enjoying the game per month I'd say £8.99 (or $15 or whatever it is in USA) is more than worth it.

How does that make sense? By tens of hours do you mean 20+? Most single player games only have a 6-10 hour campaign. And if there is multiplayer, most people put all of 20 hours into it max, and then you shell out $20 for map packs.

The numerical comparison makes no sense.

Thats about 2-3 packs of cigarettes and that takes how long to smoke? That's 2-3 Value meals and it takes how long to eat? My only issue is the 'but its $15 a month' like its some unreasonable number. It costs that much because they add consistently add content. Its unlikely most people play any game past a month anyway, cancel the subscription after 30 days if you are bored.

If you want to generalize, then everything you do besides eat, sleep, and drink is a massive waste. Its entertainment, entertainment usually hold no real value. I play guitar but its not my job, its gets me nowhere, and I spend a shitload on it, but is that a waste of time?

When I was a kid, I read all the harry potter books and it took forever, and I got nothing out of it but a good story but it was a good time.

And really, a massive waste? Say you play two months of it, thats $75, is that really massive? If you played for a straight year thats Around $210, which is the cost of an ok used beginner guitar.

You do have a point...but at least you can say "oh yea I can play guitar" nobody gives a shit about "oh yea I'm a level 30 Yoda" or however the game is played

So you play guitar so people will think you are cooler? Maybe that's not it, but are you playing guitar so you can tell people, or are you playing guitar for fun?

I don't give a shit what others think of my guitar playing because I play it for fun. I do it for pure enjoyment. I slack off doing other work so I can play guitar much like I do with video games. I don't even tell most people I play, and if I do, its not for their reaction, I do it for me.

Nobody gives a shit about your or my guitar playing really.
#19
I'm just saying someone would rather listen to you play the guitar than watch you play a video game.

You didn't really address my point.

Do you play the guitar for others, or do you play it for yourself? No one is entitled to me playing the guitar, I don't owe to anyone to play for them. I'm not saying my music is sacred, I don't shun people for listening to me, if they want to, thats cool, but if they don't thats cool also.

And why can't you do both? Why can't you do a multitude of things? I balance work, school, guitar, the old republic, and other things just fine. Playing guitar or playing the old republic does not make you a better person. You just happen to be a person who does one or the other, or both.

Well for most people it's a massive waste because they spend more time playing the game then excercising, socialising with people in real life and other things.

I could never get the game because I'd never see the light of day unless I was forced to

Game is amazing, although it is cutting back on my guitar playing time.

But spend the extra 15 and play it. after 5 hours you will already be happy with the investment

Self control is the answer. So basically, you are saying you will not play the game because you will have so much fun you wont want to stop? That sounds terrible.

Those things you listed are important to YOU, not everyone else. What's important is different to each person. You are keeping yourself healthy and you like to go out and socialize, but that's your life, not everyone elses.

Actually it's $12.99 a month to use for 6 months. which I guess, if it's loaded with campaign and stuff (I know there're just quests and shit not reallllly a campaign) it's not a terrible investment. A lot less than 1 new game every 2 months.

Pay to play/subscriptions on video games are stupid imo. Ive seen people try to justify the reason they are around, but the fact is that they are there because people will pay for them. No other reason. I have never and will never pay a damn continuous monthly fee to play a freakin video game.

That includes Xbox live. Lame. I dont blame you at all, TS. God forbid you actually expect be able to play a game that you just spent $65 on.

Dont get all pissy on me either. Thats my opinion and the way I see it. If you want to pay for them and all that, thats fine by me. As has been said, everyone has different priorities and ideas of whats important to them. Just adding my 2 cents cause I feel for TS!

I'm playing it and loving it.

Level 50 Sith Warrior Juggernaut, spec'd Vengeance (burst damage). Been getting into HM flashpoints and getting ready for Ops/Raids with my guild.

I quit WoW after 2.5 years of progression raiding last May. Jumped into TOR and I'm having an absolute blast.

Well sadly when things tend to be incredibly addictive (for better or worse), people become addicted. I'm not criticizing the game or MMORPGs, but a lot of people lack self-control when it comes to things such as this. I they're thorougly enjoying themselves they may not see a need to stop. And then in some cases people look back and wish they'd had spent their time, money, and effort into something more constructive. Like you said self-control is the answer, but people become addicted easy and in many cases don't have good self-control.

I personally think I have some sense of self-control but I have too much on my plate right now to be investing in this game.

And to an earlier point about cost; Yes, a $75 dollar investment to play a game for two months is actually pretty costly when you have other things to pay for such as bills, food, gas, etc.

Yeah it's pretty good, it's very polished for a new release.
Got a Vanguard to level 30, I particularly enjoyed the huttball warzone.
I was enjoying everything til they locked my account.. I can't be bothered ringing up support though.

So back to WoW for me, to absorb an 8th year of my life.

You serious?? You spend $75 or whatever and then give up when your account gets locked because you can't be assed to ring support?

The reason the fees exist is because they constantly update the game with new material. They have to pay the game designers somehow.

Of course the other alternative is in-game advertising, which I'm sure no one wants.

Did you do ANY research before buying or did you just think "ooh Star Wars" and buy it...

tbh, I would've done this if it was available back when I first heard about it >_>

imo a subscription would be worth it but I'm not getting it because I don't have enough money.

Yeah... not if they're actually worth the money. If I spend 40 quid on a game I want at the very, very least 12-15 hours out of it, and even then it has to be fucking awesome and have replay value. If I'm just gonna play it once it should be 20 at least, but 30 or 40 is obviously better.

There's no point in making a campaign you can finish in one sitting, unless it's something really special, like Portal. Games like CoD might as well be multiplayer only, considering how shite the single player is.

Anyway, I don't mind games with monthly fees. I played EVE Online for like a month in the Summer, but I didn't continue because I don't want to fail my degree and I prefer having a social life.

This, so much... by making you pay a monthly fee, they're trying to make you feel like you SHOULD be playing it all the time, like every hour not spent playing the game is a waste of the money you're paying for the ability to. ****, this has gotta be the most expensive game I've ever heard of... ughh

Apparently you have to buy immediately extra subscription with a creditcard or via a store 60 days subscription for 35 euro's before you can play. So you don't really get the first 30 days for free. I don't have a creditcard and didn't see it in the stores.

So I can't buy it.
