Today I was checking out some vids on youtube, and I came across this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri4Q-j2Zqyw

My question is, how are the musical styles called he plays in the first (clean) riff, and the second (dirty) riff, and more important: what kind of bands played such music?

I would really like to learn to play such types of music!

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, don't know where to put it elsewhere!

No, its certainly not funk.

My guess is blues or folk but I am no music expert, could somebody name some bands who make music like this?

the clean is quite funk-rocky to my ears, but there is definitely some blues in there. the second tone is more bluesy, kinda like an SRV-ish blues

Yeah, it's funk but with a touch of blues. Sounds like something Prince would do.

You win. I'm done here.

The first is clearly funk/funk-rock with a blues influence. Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Prince as mentioned are good places to explore this sort of stuff.

The second struck me as texas blues/rock. SRV is your man if you want examples of that.

Bits of it remind of the theme song from Rounders for some reason. Which is apparently a track called Funk #49 by the James Gang. Beyond that, I have no useful input. In conclusion, watch the movie Rounders and... kthnxbai.

Thank you guys! When I listened to SRV I clearly heared to comparisson, however I did not hear this with RHCP and James Gang, do you have other examples especially for the first part?

Have a look for Dave Navarro's star licks video, he shows you stuff like this. He's not a great teacher but at least he shows how to play some stuff and slows it down.

Whow thanks! That Dave Navarro and John Mayer stuff is awesome and indeed very close!
