so my friends esp ltd ec 100 is making a awful humming noise when its plugged in to the amp at our rehearsal studio but the thing is if you put your finger on the tone knob of the guitar it stops humming so is it some kind of ground issue or does he need to change the tone pot ?

Sounds like a ground issue. Open the back cavity up and check to see if all the wires are connected properly, and the soldering is all good.
