im wanting to change the valves in my amp i have looked the prices
up on the net and they range from 60.00 to 87.00 without shipping cost .

my question is the cheapest vender is 59.99 for 3 power tubes and matched
quads on amazon .

and another vender Eurotubes has a list of options the tubes they give
are all the same type but the options are whether there hand picked
high gain preamp tubes and all options have whether or not you have
more headroom or moderate or early break up i understand what
it means but is it worth 17.00 more for the extra so called hand picked
valves ? list of options

looks like a load of marketing hype to me

Those sets have different types of tubes. Have you tried adding up the cost of the individual tubes listed in the set and compared the price?

there no difference in price, i think there charging for grading the valves
and the current for high output .

If there is no difference in price then they are just making it easier for you to select a particular compliment of tubes to do a particular task. A lot of us swap and change valves around; different types have different results. From a cursory look at the sets, their selection seems pretty much what I would recommend for the tasks described too.

Yeah, that is Bob just trying to make the ordering easier. Some of that stuff is marketing B.S. Also, he only sells JJs. There are other tube types out there. This is my standard list:

www.thevalvequeen.com
www.tubedepot.com
www.thetubestore.com
www.eurotubes.com (not in europe)
www.hotroxuk.com (in europe)

You mentioned above '3 power tubes and a match quad'.

I think you meant 3 preamp tubes. Those are the little ones. 12AX7s

What kind of amp is this and how do you know you need all new tubes?

the amp is a classic 30, the valves are the same sense Ive had the amp
for about 10 yrs it works but not sure if it has degraded over time or if
the valves have ever been replaced sense the amp was made (1995)
and working at full potential .

im thinking that replacing them might improve the tone and gain or might not
its the only valve amp Ive ever had .

of course i don't want to replace them if don't need to but i know of no way
to check them .

I like a place call "thetubestore.com". They are in Canada. Great guys and great customer service.
Got a bad tube from them and they sent a new one out right away along with
a return ship ticket for the bad one.

not really. i wouldn't get too hung up on it. some of it is myth.

generally though

JJs, Mullards, SED could be considered darker or warmer sounding.

Tung Sol, Sovtek and Shuguang could be considered brighter.

power tubes won't have as much of a difference as preamp tubes.

NOS preamp tubes are where it is at
